Young people in Luton deserve more than to “beat the odds.” The odds should not be stacked against them in the first place. We’ll keep working until every young person here has a fair chance – wherever they’re from, and wherever they’re going. /12.

🚆 Luton is 20 mins from the capital – but for many young people, the route to those opportunities is blocked. We need to break down those barriers—bring more opportunities here, and open up new ones there. /11.

So what can we do?. ✅ Strengthen local partnerships – schools, employers, colleges. ✅ Support transition and outcomes beyond GCSEs. ✅ Create spaces where young people are heard and supported. ✅ Build opportunity into Luton, not just point to London. /10.

But let’s be clear:. This isn’t about young people lacking aspiration—we see the ambition every day. We see the talent. It’s about systems that aren’t built for them, and lack of strategic investment. /9.

The Sutton Trust highlights what we already see in our work:. 🧭 Where you live shapes the support you get. 📈 Some schools & communities are better resourced. 🔁 Pathways into university or work aren’t equal. /8.

In Luton South, there’s a mix of income levels, school outcomes, and local access to support. In Luton North, where poverty is more concentrated, there aren’t the same buffers – and it shows in long-term outcomes. /7.

The report talks about the “diversity dividend”. Ethnically diverse communities often show high aspirations and strong family support for education – and it shows up in outcomes, even where money is tight. Luton South may be benefiting from diversity has a positive impact. /6.

But the picture is mixed. 👉🏽 Luton South scores highly – thanks in part to educational outcomes & diversity of backgrounds. 👉🏽Luton North scores much lower – even though post-16 destinations are fairly strong. We need to understand why. /5.

That matters to us. We know Luton has huge potential. We also know the barriers many young people here face – from housing to income to discrimination. So when progress shows up in the data, we want to celebrate it and build on it. /4.

⭐️ Of the top 20 areas for opportunity, all are in London. 📍But #33 on the list – the highest rank outside London – is right here: Luton South & South Bedfordshire. Young people here are doing better than peers in many other parts of England. /3.

In London, young people from lower-income backgrounds are more likely to get good GCSEs, go to university, and earn more as adults. This is what social mobility can look like. But outside London, it’s a different story. /2.
