Walked into Mrs. Parkerβs Gr1 classroom @avenue_lake to see she and students manipulating phonemes and building words using some large letter tiles on the board. What an awesome activity to build phonetic and phonemic awareness. Manipulating phonemes is a huge part of reading.

Even in 2 weeks, we can see that small group, targeted instruction is making a difference. Kids are reading more fluently and confidently. Educators are prioritizing this time with kids. My @RSHWDSB heart is happy! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ cc @SMilinovich @BurnagielHWDSB

Word ladders (also called word chains) is an effective activity that my students enjoy using during literacy centres. This activity supports letter-sound correspondence and reading and spelling skills. @SoRclassroom @qvhwdsb @hwdsb #structuredliteracy #SoR #literacy
