Our data suggest that i) mtSSU biogenesis & formation of initiation complexes (IC) are not mutually exclusive processes but can occur simultaneously, and ii) MTG3 acts as a quality control factor coupling late mtSSU maturation with IC formation primed for translation initiation.

Happy to share a new preprint, in which we describe the mechanism of human tRNA 3' processing. We show why the RNase Z ELAC2 acts as a monomer in the nucleus, but forms a multi-subunit complex in mitochondria. Plase see 🧵 by @BhattaArjun2p for details! https://t.co/cY5Dj66wkw

The formation of these protein-only complexes is independent of the rRNA and our data indicate that rRNA synthesis is the rate-limiting step during ribosome assembly in human mitochondria.

We show that mitochondrial ribosomes assemble via protein-only modules, which are formed in excess and which present primed building blocks for the progression of subunit assembly.
