When I was in college I heard a talk by Alger Hiss, who clerked for Justice Holmes, who told Lincoln to get down! during Jubal Early's raid on DC. In Congress Lincoln knew JQA who heard the cannon of Bunker Hill from his house in Braintree.

Washington's elections were the cheapest campaigns ever. All he had to do was not say he wouldn't serve.

@RBrookhiser Of course Washington 'stood' for office. He didn't 'run' for office. Monroe 'rode' for office.

My first book party. Doubleday's function room on Fifth Ave., long gone. So is WFB. So is that multi-colored jacket, and most of the hair.

@jaketapper "Meh" to anything that has "rap" & "musical" in the same sentence. I'd rather re-read @RBrookhiser 's Hamilton biography.

@rmunro3 @RBrookhiser The US is lucky that Lee was not executed. He was the symbol of the South to his people. Had he been punished, Reconstruction would have been much, much more bitter and violent and might have ultimately failed. See 21st Century Iraq.

@RBrookhiser Was a bit tongue in cheek. i don’t think another ‘founding father’ is more of a personal disappointment then tj. slavery/Sally Hemings, gross debt, smear campaign on Adams, backstabbing of GW. Pretty ugly from the man that was THE epitome of 1776 when I was in elementary school
