I'm 67 years old, and just now learned what a 'French exit' is. For the similarly uninformed, it's when one furtively leaves a party or gathering without saying goodbye to the host/hostess. Of greater interest to me is the term for not showing up at a gathering to which one. .

All this reveals is the petty spite of so many these days who resent the lingering popularity of composers of the past, and who resent the reality that dead composers still generally outshine present practitioners.

Recently, I've been reading Oliver Wendell Holmes' 'The Autocrat at the Breakfast Table,' first published in the Atlantic Monthly in the 1850s. I find it a fine antidote to today's mindless droning, found both online and in what passes for 'literature' in these benighted times.
