🚨TWO feedback groups this month🚨
In-Person:
o Thursday, April 25 at 12PM, 3PM & 6PM
- Online via Zoom:
o Sunday, April 28 at 1PM & 4PM
These are crucial opportunities to provide feedback to the administration.
We at the Mütter Museum Preservation Society would like to make a clarification, as there appears to be some confusion afoot. No one in this campaign believes
@MutterMuseum
is perfect. There are incredibly important ethical debates that deserve to be had.
This page (Protect the Mütter) has been blocked by the Mütter's facebook page. The Mütter's page has also gone & scrubbed a ton of negative/questioning comments. (Because they're not actually interested in anyone's opinion or viewpoint apart from their own).
Folks...really don't know how many times/ways we need to say this. We support the ethical review of all human remains in the Mütter collection (whether on display or not) and we always have. That's not what the administration is doing.

Thank you to everyone who is signing and sharing our petition. A reminder that none of the funds "chipped in" to change[dot]org goes to us, or the petition. It just goes to
@Change
. Over $6,500 has been contributed, unfortunately none of which benefits our cause.
Folks - we are SO close to the 35k signatures mark. We'd really, really like to get there before the Town Hall on 10/17. Help us out by sharing the petition as far and wide as possible! The Town Hall is going to be a big deal, and we want to make as much of an impact as possible
remains is paramount to the understanding of the human condition. That these remains deserve dignity & appreciation, not scorn & concealment. If the leadership at the
@MutterMuseum
&
@CollegeofPhys
wanted to have frank, open discussions & involve members of affected communities,
Members of indigenous & disabled communities have voiced support and disapproval of the Mütter, all with completely valid points. Our contention has never been that the Museum is perfect.
We do believe that its mission is important. That teaching & displaying and honoring human
that's what they should do. Unfortunately, that's not their plan. They are making sweeping, judgmental, reactive moves without input from anyone but their own elitist echo chamber. And THAT is what we are protecting against.
They say they're not "deconstructing" the Museum, but Kate Quinn is giving away pieces from the collection to a non-profit she sits on the board of. She tried to do it anonymously, but we found out anyway.
#muttermuseum
Hey
@StuBykofsky
we appreciate the press but it's not really a "woke" or "PC" thing, as much as "elitist medical professional" and "person who wants to run an art museum" thing. The people who love the Mütter are overwhelmingly "woke" and "progressive".
In case anyone is unclear, we believe Indigenous remains shouldn't be on display and should be repatriated. Luckily, there aren't any Indigenous remains on display at the
@MutterMuseum
. The remains in storage are undergoing the (admittedly slow) repatriation process.
One of the things the Museum highlights is the historical racism in medicine and medical history. The Hyrtl skull collection exists as a rebuttal to the bigoted practice of phrenology.
#hyrtl
#muttermuseum
If you've got a few bucks to donate, don't use it on this! We appreciate the thought but it does NOT contribute to the cause! Just to the website. Thanks,
If there are remains to be returned or repatriated they should be. Einstein didn't want any part of him on display. Indigenous remains should be returned. We've never been against any of that.
• The removal of online resources is not "trivial"
• The volume of staff that have left since Quinn took over is not normal
• Human remains provide an enduring, valuable resource to the public and medical professionals alike
• Lived, human context should be added to displays
Sharing my latest story about the messy fight over the future of Philadelphia's Mutter Museum, and it's connection to an international debate about human remains in museums.
The Mütter is a historical medical museum that contains 100+ year old specimens, many of which were collected and donated at a time before consent was taken into account. Many of the remains are of anonymous dead, who may never be identified.
We really wanted to capture the moment the petition hit 25k but this is the best we've got - we hit 25k!!! Every statement and action from
@MutterMuseum
has been a reaction to the "concern" (outrage) from the public. WE ARE HAVING AN IMPACT.
After posting a direct quote from Kate Quinn's interview with the NYT we've finally been blocked by the Mütter's instagram account. Their indignation feels misplaced but, we get it. We block people, too.
The Mütter Museum's collection of human remains is vital for educating the public. If there are descendants who have a claim to ancestral remains and want them back, then they should be granted those remains. Otherwise, let them teach.
As debate over the ethics of displaying human remains rages, people are wondering if Philadelphia’s iconic medical history museum can survive — or if it even should.
The crisis management PR firm hired by the leadership at
@MutterMuseum
issued a statement saying the furniture cases Kate Quinn secretly donated to the non-profit she sits on the board of hadn't been used in "nearly a decade". They were used in Going Viral which launched in 2019.
As we near the end of June, it is impossible to ignore that the Mütter has failed to acknowledge Pride month. In a time of such bigotry, misinformation and oppression, to neglect to even mention the history of LGBTQ contributions in medical history is a huge missed opportunity.
The administration has unveiled a "searchable online database" to the press today that they hope will quell criticism of the removal of online access. It's not comprehensive of the collection; there are no images for biological specimens.
The public feedback town hall is tomorrow. So far there is very little available information. The description says, "The meeting includes a facilitated discussion and a Q&A session, providing stakeholders the ability to share their views as we work to shape the Museum’s future."
"Educational event" is a bit of a stretch. How long is the Board of
@CollegeofPhys
going to keep letting the leadership of the
@MutterMuseum
wreck the place before they act??
HUGE THANK YOU to our supporters who volunteered to hand out fliers at Market of the Macabre at
@laurelhillphl
despite the heat, humidity, sun, and general aversion to interacting with strangers. That's just how rad our supporters are. 🫀🫀🫀
It's important for people to see how members, visitors, and fans of the Mütter Museum feel about the changes the administration is pushing. Testimonials time!
We are EXTREMELY excited to present the Protect the Mütter t-shirt from Voll Wunder!!! This fabulous local artist reached out to us with this design, wanting to donate the proceeds to the cause. Now this excellent garment can be yours!
Kate Quinn, Executive Director at
@MutterMuseum
, donated custom-made furniture pieces from the Museum to a non-profit she sits on the board of. "On the condition of anonymity". Shady, no? 🤔
@ProtectMutter
The pedestals *were* part of optometrists' tables AND part of the collection. Here is an identical example if you don't want to take my word for it:
The way to make the
@MutterMuseum
successful is not through censorship, inaccessibility or "contextualizing" exhibits. It's by honoring the legacy of the institution and respecting its members.
You know what's cool about the internet? It keeps receipts. Like when
@MutterMuseum
&
@CollegeofPhys
administration creates a new web page that makes it look like they've been addressing ongoing concerns, but they Wayback Machine confirms this site has only been live for a week.
In honor of
#BannedBooksWeek
we ask supporters to share this image and tag us as well as
@MutterMuseum
, which is hosting a virtual event Oct. 4th w/Dr. Hannah Marcus, author of "Forbidden Knowledge: Medicine, Science, & Censorship in Early Modern Italy".
@CollegeofPhys
@MutterMuseum
We see what the administration is trying to do to the Museum. It's not just about the online material & it is NOT about an "ethical review". It's about an out-of-touch leadership who wants to deconstruct the Museum & turn it into something it's not. Help us fight for the Mütter.
We are very excited for the
opportunity to be heard at tonight's town hall. If you are speaking this evening, please be respectful. We must refrain from outbursts or personal attacks. This is our chance to express what the Mütter means to us and why it needs to be protected.
New: The Mütter Museum has launched a public database of its collection showcasing 20,000 records of medical instruments and anatomical models — without images of the human remains specimens that made it famous.
Thank you to everyone who attended tonight's town hall in person and online! Thank you to the passionate speakers and patient facilitators. We heard from so many people who love and value the Mütter. We will share the recording when we have it
Do you go to events? Are you potentially comfortable interacting with strangers? Help us out! We will send you fliers to distribute *for free* at events. Send us a message, comment below, whatever works for you. We're in this together 🫀
It is genuinely heartbreaking that
@MutterMuseum
&
@CollegeofPhys
didn't broke this tradition under their new leadership and didn't celebrate Carol's birthday this year. Her YouTube video is also still down. An absolute disgrace
@MutterMuseum
Today, along with our friends at
@MutterMuseum
, we celebrate the birthday of Carol Orzel who lived with FOP and generously joined Harry Eastlack in donating her body to educate the world on the ultra-rare disease fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP).

L'shana tova to all our Jewish & Jew-ish friends! The PtM organizing team is almost entirely Jewish, so the next few days are going to be pretty busy for us. Food is such a big part of our culture, we thought we'd share a recipe from the

Leadership Cookbook
1) July is more than three weeks in
2) The

was redesigned years ago for accessibility purposes
3) There's no alt text on the photos
I mean, come on...
July is Disability Pride Month, celebrating the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), enacted in 1990. As the disability rights movement continues, we'd like to shine a light on some of the advocates whose work endures - Adolf Ratzka & Judith Heumann. A thread ⬇️
One of Philly’s hottest Halloween parties is not happening this year.
The Mütter Museum quietly canceled its popular Halloween celebration, Mischief at the Mütter, last week.
We've been hearing some unsettling rumors that the hugely popular "Mischief at the Mütter" Halloween event will not take place this year. Several supporters have tried to find out and can't get a straight answer from
@MutterMuseum
.

Kate Quinn wants to undo the incredible work of the late museum curator and director Gretchen Worden. Gretchen Worden championed the mission of the

Another casualty to the Quinn/Irons administration. Where is the oversight from the board?

do you not see what's happening at the

We've been a little quiet this month because of some exciting developments behind-the-scenes. Our organizers have been engaged in very productive conversations w/persons high up in the administration & feel cautiously optimistic about the future. Good things may be on the horizon
We've updated our Calls to Action checklist! Please make sure you've checked each box and DON'T STOP. We need to keep the pressure up and work together to Protect the Mütter!!
It's true, we called it that. If they want feedback, they should look at all the emails, comments, messages, posts, cancelled memberships, and over 34,000 signatures on our petition
The
@MutterMuseum
and
@CollegeofPhys
made a post two and a half months ago claiming there would be a "series of discussions" because they allegedly want to hear from us. We have seen no evidence of these discussions.
@BanquetOCT
Thank you! Unfortunately the "chip in" option on change[dot]org doesn't help our campaign at all it just goes to the site. We've been asking people who want to donate instead to give to
@ernestbeckerfdn
or
@elunanetwork
(they have no affiliation with us but are good causes)
The

administration has admitted to keeping a "watch list". Supporters have been followed by security. Don't be intimated by their tactics.

Join us next week for a special after-hours event to honor Gretchen Worden (1947–2004). Gretchen was Curator 1982-1988 and Curator & Director 1988–2004. Enjoy evening access with complimentary snacks and drinks. We'll also have a surprise announcement!

Thanks to sales of the Protect the Mütter shirt we've been able to boost TEN facebook posts and spread the word of our campaign much more widely than before! We also were able to purchase promotional materials from

If they really wanted to take a "more respectful approach" they would have celebrated Carol Orzel's birthday like they have every year before this administration. And not taken down her video. And wouldn't have Einstein's brain slides on display. Or the Soap Lady. We could go on.
The Mütter Museum, a beloved 19th-century collection of medical curiosities and human remains in Philadelphia, wants to adopt a more “respectful” approach. Some fans won’t have it.
• Any remains with descendants who have a claim and want them back should get them
• Remains with no claim or provenance shouldn't be hidden away, but allowed to continue as educators
• There should be more acknowledgement of the methods that went into procuring the collection
Pennsylvania still doesn't recognize the Lenape Nation. It is well past due for Pennsylvania to join our neighbor states of New Jersey and Delaware in recognizing their own Lenape descendants.

You might be thinking, "that's an odd institution to be a matching donor" until you realize it's the HR firm that did the investigation into all the HR complaints about the current leadership! And now that very same firm is getting a tax write-off from the administration. 🤨🧐🤔
Thank you for making this Giving Tüesday a success! We surpassed our goal and raised over $20,000 for the conservation of our collections. With a generous matching gift from Princeton HR, LLC everyone's gift, no matter the size, was doubled! We can't do this without Ü 🧠❤️
In case anyone was curious, this campaign is about one thing: protecting the institution of the Mütter Museum from forces who do not have its been interests at heart. Not to stir up turmoil, or create conflict. We're not affiliated with the Museum (or College) in any way. Just a
If

leadership cared about the dignity of and respect for human remains they wouldn't have the skull of Mary Ashberry's baby on the floor. It would be so simple to display it more humanely. A pillow, a pedestal, something.
Dr. Mütter's Merry Emporium is canceled. Several supporters who have vended at the Merry Emporium in the past alerted us to this alarming development. The administration says they're "listening" but canceling another beloved and well-attended event indicates otherwise.
Have you cancelled or chosen not to renew your

membership? Speak out! Email info

I don't believe there have been any news stories or press releases addressing ethical procedure those are likely internal to the Museum/College. I know they're compliant with NAGPRA. Many of the remains st the Mütter were voluntary (and enthusiastic) donations like Carol Orzel
The leadership is spending hundreds of thousands of grant dollars in the hope enough people will agree with their agenda to justify changes. Disgraceful.
New: The Mütter plans to host public town halls and other events to ask the public to weigh in on questions of ethics and consent surrounding its human remains collection. The initiative is called "Postmortem: Mütter Museum."
We're always so heartened to see the leadership at
@MutterMuseum
(especially board chair
@JuliaHallerMD
herself!) showing support for our movement. We hope this will come through in actions as well.
