We are honoured to announce that Professor Ellen O'Sullivan is the recipient of the DAS Macewan medal 2022!
A true role model for all of us 👏👏👏
#DAS2022
Prof Mapleson was a modest, quiet gentleman with a superb intellect. He was a physicist of course !On receiving the DAS Macewen Medal in 2012 he delivered a wonderfully erudite lecture entitled “Reflections on 60 yrs of research in anaesthesia”. Only used 2 slides in 1 hr lecture
Bill Mapleson, inventor of the eponymous classification of anaesthetic circuits and a huge contributor to the world of anaesthesia, has died. Here is the citation for the DAS medal he was awarded in 2012:

: In the DEVICE trial, the use of video laryngoscopy in critically ill patients undergoing intubation in the ED or ICU resulted in a higher incidence of successful intubation on the first attempt than direct laryngoscopy.
Dr Brains paper in
@BJAJournals
was short & brilliantly written . Rejected first as only included 23 pts.
Most were laparoscopies using NMBlockers &
PPV. Read it PLEASE . It predicts the trajectory with LMAs & airway mx
@BJAJournals
Brain's introduction of the LMA was initially met with scepticism, and he struggled to find backers at first. Though its potential was evident, few could predict the monumental shift it would bring in airway management practices 1/4

175 years ago today, the first operation in Ireland in which general anaesthesia was used took place at the Richmond Hospital, Dublin. The patient was Mary Kane, aged 18 years. A Dublin newspaper, The Pilot, reported on the event that evening. 'Breaking News' in 1847!

Sadly life is more complex
-not all locations have capnography (eg wards, LMIC settings)
-not all oesophageal intubation leads to a clear flat or even ever flat capnograph
IMO each case merits careful, objective, humble review.
As I read more cases the simplicity reduces.

Rather than 'just another extra guideline' the PUMA Principles are intended to be unifying documents, consistent with the current major airway guidelines.
PUMA will not replace the existing guidelines but will highlight areas of commonality.
