My advice to journos covering Syria: this is a complex story to tell with a criminal regime, bad actors, foreign influence & uncertainty of what's to come. Tell complex stories, but center your stories in the agency of Syrians. It's their story, their country, their freedom.

What happened in Syria will have reverberations across the region. As the 2019 uprisings reminded us, the Syrian people remind us once again; these kleptocratic repressive regimes are often hollow & despised by many of their own agents. Their fragility is regularly underestimated
