Just completed @christianwolmar’s magnificent tome on British Railways. Prior to sectorisation, didn’t quite appreciate the pervasive influence of the ‘Barons’ and the ‘Bishops’ & the levels of insipid government interference! excellent #holidayreading reflective #businesshistory

In 1905 the Great Northern set up its own steamship company with 2 liners of magnificent 1st-class passenger accommodation - Dakota & Minnesota - built in Connecticut yards. They were the largest ships of the Pacific region. Edwardian travellers had an alternativ to the Far East.

The Oriental Limited was a deluxe train with an exemplary culinary offer. Known for its afternoon tea service where promptly at 4.00pm, a dining car waiter served tea and a uniformed maid served platters of dainty cakes to passengers.

Available in English too..tho this is a fab cover...and shame I am unlikely to ever be able to travel on the line again
