Congressmember for WA-07 and lifelong organizer for immigrant, civil, and human rights. Progressive Caucus Chair. Bold, unafraid, and a proud mom. She/her.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to voters in
#WA07
for re-electing me with such a huge margin to serve another term in the House! I am humbled, honored & I promise I will keep fighting for our freedoms, for our families & for opportunity for everyone to thrive! 🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️
What are we supposed to tell voters in 2 years before the midterms? Sorry, we couldn’t pass the $15 minimum wage that we promised you because the Senate parliamentarian advised against it?
Two-thirds of voters want this done. Time to deliver.
The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 since 2009.
For tipped workers, it’s been $2.13 for 30 years.
The problem is NOT expanded unemployment assistance.
I am tearing up just thinking about what it would mean to Americans everywhere--and to the world--to have
@BernieSanders
as President, fighting for US. I am so ready for that.
I am so offended by candidates & pundits who try to paint
@BernieSanders
supporters as offensive. That erases the vast majority of us—many women & folks of color—who support Sanders and are inspired by the loving, generous movement we are building. Stop attacking US.
I will not stop talking about how I was ready to fight for my life.
I will not stop talking about hearing the insurrectionists on the other side of the door.
I will not stop talking about being forced into a superspreader event.
Hold EVERYONE involved fully accountable.
.
@PramilaJayapal
was in the House gallery Wednesday afternoon because Covid-19 restrictions meant that only so many members of Congress could be on the House floor at one time. She talks about what happened next in today's episode of Deconstructed /1
I'm all in for
@BernieSanders
for President! Bernie has the bold passion, authenticity & clarity that working people across this country desperately need.
We are building the progressive movement that will bring justice & opportunity & transform our country. Join us!
Rep.
@PramilaJayapal
has been a brilliant leader for progressive ideas. She's led the fight against Trump's racism, sexism and xenophobia. Together, we will defeat Trump and build a working class movement and transform this country so it works for all.
I am a
@BernieSanders
supporter, but please.
@ewarren
was prepared, smart, unrelenting & on point in taking on sexism. “Mean and angry” is such a stereotype and unfair.
Police shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back, leaving him paralyzed.
Meanwhile, Kyle Rittenhouse illegally carried a rifle and was not arrested for shooting and murdering protesters until he was home in Illinois.
There is no logic to support this. This is white supremacy.
This is a really important point that
@ewarren
is making: the ultra-rich make their money off accumulated wealth not income. That’s why you have to tax wealth not just income.
Today I am announcing my endorsement of
@JoeBiden
for President of the United States.
VP Biden is a deeply dedicated public servant with the ability to unite the American people. I am moved by his compassion and ability to connect with people on the most human level.
Pentagon budget: $750+ billion/year
Build Back Better Act: $350 billion/year for 10 years
Guess which one of these we rubber stamp every year, and which one is "too much"? It’s time for us to invest in people and communities.
Why are we fighting for recurring checks?
Here's why:
🍼 diapers and formula can cost more than $200/month
🍝 feeding a family of 4 costs more than $700/month
🏡 average monthly rent is $1,468/month
They're survival checks for a reason. People need this money to live.
Profits last year:
Exxon: $23 billion
Shell: $19.3 billion
Chevron: $15.6 billion
BP: $12.8 billion
Rising gas prices are THEIR choice. We have to reign in corporate greed.
43 Republican Senators with UNLIMITED paid sick leave voted against providing rail workers just SEVEN days off to care for themselves or loved ones.
The hypocrisy is astounding.
ANNOUNCEMENT: With all the racism coming from the White House, I will NOT be attending
@realDonaldTrump
's State of the Union.
Instead, we'll focus on the State of OUR Union, our opposition to his agenda, and we will lift up a progressive and inclusive vision of our country.
There are still Republicans who deny that Joe Biden won the election. Is this a party that’s interested in bipartisan compromise? No. We need to abolish the filibuster, pass our popular agenda, and deliver for the American people.
Elon Musk made $36 BILLION in one day, but wants to brag about paying an $11 billion tax bill.
Oh yeah, he also added more than $270 BILLION in wealth just since the pandemic started.
Time for the rich to pay their fair share.
We can’t let one or two Democrats prevent the $15 minimum wage from being in the relief bill. It’s bad politics and bad policy.
The American people need a raise and we need to deliver one.
To my Republican colleagues, take note of tonight’s
#KYGov
results in a state the president won by 30 points:
@realDonaldTrump
and his base will not protect you.
Vote your conscience.
Elon Musk, who made $36 billion in ONE day this week, would owe just under $8 billion under my wealth tax proposal with
@ewarren
.
Yes, he and other billionaires can afford to pay their fair share so we can fund child care, universal pre-k, housing, and more.
Calling Warren--a public school teacher who grew up in the South--"elitist" is really offensive.
When it comes to attitude, let's just remember we've had a lot of men telling us what we can't do for an awfully long time. I'm ready for some people telling us what we CAN do.
95% of Congressional Democrats support the entire Build Back Better agenda.
70% of voters want us to pass it.
We won't let corporate interests and billionaires stand in the way of delivering.
It’s not the infrastructure bill THEN maybe the Build Back Better package down the road. That wasn’t the deal.
Progressives won’t back down. We’re fighting the people’s fight and we’re going to deliver the entire Build Back Better agenda.
The Senate parliamentarian issues an advisory opinion. The VP can overrule them—as has been done before.
We should do EVERYTHING we can to keep our promise, deliver a $15 minimum wage, and give 27 million workers a raise.
I was in the same briefing as you,
@RepJayapal
, and this is absolutely false. You and your squad of Ayatollah sympathizers are spreading propaganda that divides our nation and strengthens our enemies.
#Iran
I voted tonight for
@BernieSanders
for President, because I know he will stand up for all of us & help build a movement for a just future.
#NotMeUs
#Believe
Jeff Bezos would pay just over $6.3 billion under my wealth tax with
@ewarren
— less than the $8.4 BILLION he made on TUESDAY.
The ultra-rich can afford to pay their fair share.
We’ve seen this movie before.
Republicans will ask for concession after concession, and STILL not vote for the watered-down bill they demanded.
Let’s learn from history. It’s time for us to go big, bold, and on our own on infrastructure. Let’s deliver for the people.
When Buttigieg says that
#NotMeUs
campaign is leaving most Democrats out, he clearly is not looking at incredibly broad coalition that
@BernieSanders
has built. The fact that Buttigieg is not able to win folks of color should lead to introspection about who HE is leaving out.
We ended the filibuster for federal judges and Supreme Court justices, made a carveout for the debt ceiling, and changed it over 160 TIMES in the last few decades, but a carveout to protect voting rights and save our democracy is a step too far?
End the filibuster now.
We can afford a $770 BILLION Pentagon budget, but we can't afford paid leave, climate action, affordable housing, universal child care, and other investments in working people?
Make it make sense.
Whatever happens in Georgia, everyone should get on their knees and thank strong Black women like the fearless
@staceyabrams
and so many who slog away without appreciation—and then we should pass real policies that benefit them. This all may come down to Georgia & Arizona.
.
@BernieSanders
is broadly liked because he is trustworthy, authentic and people believe he will fight for them. He has the courage to take on the biggest industries that have flipped our country on its head, and to make our economy work for working people again.
Polls have consistently shown that Sanders is broadly liked by Democratic voters. The possibility has been staring us in the face for some time that he’d start winning contests and that the bandwagon would start growing pretty quickly.
Let me get this straight: we only need 51 votes to pass tax cuts for the wealthy, but 60 to protect voting rights and save our democracy?
We cannot sit back and wait. End the filibuster and ACT.
Great news, but we are not letting up!
#TeamBernie
is winning because of
@BernieSanders
bold ideas, steadfastness & clarity on how we turn this country around.
With respect,
@neeratanden
, this is not accurate nor helpful. Progressive ideas like
#MedicareForAll
, the need for humane
#immigration
policy,
#fightfor15
are winning even now with Dem voters, all pushed by the movement you are criticizing & minimizing.
There’s a whole group of people who’ve been profoundly and utterly wrong about the Dem party and what it wants for 5 years. Despite all the evidence of 2018, they created a false narrative that very left policies would drive turnout and win the majority. None of it has been true
The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 for 12 years. The federal tipped wage has been $2.13 for 30 years.
It’s time for a $15 minimum wage for ALL workers. It can’t wait.
.
@BernieSanders
spoke to hopes of Black, Brown, white working folks in room tonight & around the nation. Universal healthcare, $15 minimum wage, taking on climate crisis: these are not radical ideas! Join our multiracial, multigenerational movement for change.

Here’s what a few billionaires would owe with a
#WealthTax
:
💵Jeff Bezos: $5.7B
💵Elon Musk: $4.6B
💵Bill Gates: $3.6B
That'd leave them with:
📈Bezos: $185B
📈Musk: $149B
📈Gates: $116B
Something tells me they’d be okay. It’s time for the ultra-rich to pay their fair share.
Terminating my pregnancy was a difficult choice. But it was just that — MY choice.
We can't let Trump’s Supreme Court justices strip that choice, and the right to a safe, legal abortion from millions of people.
Reproductive rights are HUMAN rights.
Speaking of potholes... the giant hole in “Medicare For All Who Want It” is cost containment.
You simply cannot lower our astronomical health care costs without removing the profit motive and tackling administrative waste.
We need
#MedicareForAll
.
@pplsummit
@Phinatic413
Gosh! Okay... I, Pete Buttigieg, politician, do henceforth and forthwith declare, most affirmatively and indubitably, unto the ages, that I do favor Medicare for All, as I do favor any measure that would help get all Americans covered. Now if you'll excuse me, potholes await.
Elon Musk — who used *checks notes* $4.9 billion in government subsidies to launch Tesla — doesn’t think we should help working families afford electric vehicles.
Here’s what I think: Tax the rich.
For more than three months now, we’ve been clear that we are NOT voting for one of these bills without the other.
Working people, families, and our communities are counting on us to deliver the entire Build Back Better agenda.
Voters gave us the White House, the Senate, AND the House last year — that's a mandate for change.
Let's govern like it. End the filibuster and deliver for the people.
I’m so honored that my colleagues have elected me Chair of the Progressive Caucus.
We have massive crises knocking at our nation’s door and our work has never been more important. It’s time for Congress to act boldly and restore power to where it belongs: with the people.
It’s been 12 years since we’ve raised the minimum wage and 30 since we’ve raised the federal tipped wage. We can’t keep kicking the can down the road as millions are pushed into poverty.
In a crisis like this, working people need all the help we can provide. Let’s deliver.
Elon Musk launched Tesla on the back of $4.9 billion in government subsidies.
And now he doesn't want to pay his fair share of taxes? It's time to tax the rich.
Ppl said
@BernieSanders
couldn’t win Iowa or NH. He did.
Ppl said he couldn’t win POC, build diverse base.
#HelloNevada
He did.
Ppl said he can’t win against Trump. He’s polling better than anyone else against Trump.
Question assumptions. Old playbook doesn’t work.
#NotMeUs
Over 90% of fentanyl is brought into the country by U.S. citizens.
The fentanyl crisis has nothing to do with immigrants. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.
We needed Medicare for All before the pandemic.
We need Medicare for All during the pandemic.
We'll need Medicare for All after the pandemic.
Let's finally guarantee health care to everyone as a human right.
Why do the debate moderators keep framing things to have one candidate attack the other? How about just asking people to give their best ideas and see what emerges?
A $50,000 cutoff for survival checks is absurd and will leave 40,000,000 people out of much-needed relief during this crisis.
Someone making $51,000 is not “high-income.”
Not a single Republican plans to vote for a bill that delivers universal pre-k, affordable child care, a monthly Child Tax Credit, and paid family leave.
We will deliver for working families anyway.
Reminder: the federal minimum wage has been $7.25 for 12 years. The federal tipped wage has been $2.13 for even longer—THIRTY years.
How can Congressmembers believe wages like this are acceptable? We must give 32 million workers the raise they need AND deserve.
Most interesting detail of
#IowaCaucuses
: while overall turnout stagnated, # of voters < 25 yrs increased 65% &
@BernieSanders
got more of those voters than next three candidates combined. How we win: expand electorate, pay attention to base.
I appreciate the robust healthcare debate my Democratic colleagues have brought to the table. But as lead sponsor of
#MedicareForAll
, I find it misleading when my fellow Democrats use the
#M4A
name to describe proposals that are NOT
#MedicareForAll
We need everyone in the streets. Trump has put us in this position with his military brinksmanship. We must de-escalate immediately, protect American lives & move to diplomacy not war. This is a critical time for the American people to be heard.
