I'm a big fan of Henderson's First Law of Econometrics. It holds very strongly in many domains. For modern, high-quality studies, lay readers just do not tend to have criticisms that haven't already been addressed by the study's authors.

Among countless other things that make me happy about it, Poland did it without an "industrial policy". Just stable policy, modest but consistent growth, the craziness of our politicians restrained by the EU, and a broad-based economy - you can't point to one sector driving it

A new study in JAMA tracks all children's breakfast cereals launched since 2010. Even starting from a low baseline, the trend was higher fat, sodium, carbs, and sugar and lower protein and fiber. There's a reason American cereals are sold in candy stores in Europe. via @statnews

It annoys me a little how unwilling econ students are to do case studies Say you're studying bank lending in the US, you learn a ton by getting on the phone with loan officers at a couple of banks, and surprisingly often people will write whole papers without ever doing this

I'm excited to try it, but so far my experience of Deep Research is it asks me many questions about the prompt, then tells me it'll "get back to me soon", then I never hear from it again...

I'd love to see a proper IO analysis of the deepseek shock on Nvidia. What we learned, is that you can do much more with an Nvidia GPU than we thought. But it’s not immediately obvious that this is bad news for Nvidia. Imagine Nvidia had just announced that its next-generation

Many social programs are presented as investments that will pay for themselves via better outcomes in the future. But is it true? What if govt funding was tied to outcomes rather than inputs? We @Arnold_Ventures and others tested that model in a first of its kind project. 1/12

Fact: It’s easier for the U.S. to hire Sriram Krishnan for a senior White House position than it would be for Modi to hire him as a joint secretary in some ministry that nobody has heard of.

Fascinating paper on where 6000 global elites went to college. Billionaires, CEOs, heads of state, central bankers, etc. In a word: Harvard. Fully 10% of global elites went to Harvard. Elite US schools are over-represented (23% IvyPlus), but nobody comes close to Harvard. 🧵
