GUEST RESEARCHER Dr. Ingrid Horák Terra is a researcher at the Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri (UFVJM), in Brazil, and is a specialist in peatlands and veredas soils. Ingrid works with us on the molecular composition and mercury of Brazilian peat.

#MeetTheTeam Irune Valderrábano Gonzalez is the new postdoc of the PollutedPast team and is in charge of researching for mentions of metals in Greek medical texts. Her specialty is the History of women in the Greek world. Being able to count on her is a luxury for our project.

In recent days, one of the members of PollutedPast, Irune Valderrábano, has given a couple of talks in Basauri (Bizkaia) and in Bárcena de Cicero (Cantabria). Both increasing our view of the past including women.

The last 15th November we celebrated our Open Day at CRETUS. It was a pleasure to show children and adults the pollen, the texts, and the skeletons we work with. Everyone was part of PollutedPast for a day. Thank you to all visitors.

The last weeks have been intense. Two postdocs from the project PollutedPast have submitted applications to lead European projects. Jenny Sjöström has presented her ERC Starting Grant project on mercury. Noemí Silva Sánchez leads a COST action proposal on metals in the past. 🤞

#MeetTheTeam Sonia Robles Carrasco is our technician in Osteology and Paleopathology. Her job is to prepare new collections of human remains for metal analysis. Sonia has extensive experience and has implemented a new registration protocol in our Osteotheque.

#MeetTheTeam Jacobo Rodriguez Garrido is a postdoctoral researcher at PollutedPast. He is specialized in Roman Law and living conditions of slaves. He has also worked intensively on Roman Epigraphy and databases.

Archaelogical & #paleoclimate #fieldwork on Öland, SE-Sweden. We had to almost swim through ~70 cm high standing water of <10°C to even reach the coring sites. But it was worth it! 220 cm of sediment for the #ERC project @PollutedPast, likely covering the last ~11.500 years.

Noemí Silva, one of our PollutedPast postdocs, has done a research stay suprrvised by has done a short research stay suprrvised by Dr. Ben Gearey in the Department of Archeology at University College Cork. Her stay was funded by CRETUS short travel grants.
