Our new nature film “Bumblebees, shooting stars and buzz pollination in the wild” uses slow motion macro video to highlight ecology of buzz pollination in #bumblebees and green sweat bees. Plus cool scenes of queens mating, grooming & nest searching https://t.co/mI8CO4a1DL PlsRT

We usually film pollinator behavior with a 400mm telephoto lens, rather than a macro lens, so we can capture images of bees visiting flowers 3-4 meters away. My preferred lens is the Canon Rf 100-400, a compact telephoto lens that weighs just 635g. I use single point autofocus.

My students and I shoot video with the Canon full frame R5 mirrorless camera. This camera produces very high quality 4k video at 120 fps. The video can then be played back at 30 fps, which is ¼ normal speed.

#SCAPE2024 was a very engaging conference, where all things pollination were discussed. Met some great people in the field, doing incredible work. Presented on insect pollinator distribution in the mosaic southern Cape forests. @JeffOllerton gave a fascinating keynote!

“Maybe at the heart of conserving insects is to be able to see them and connect with them,” says Hollis Woodard, an entomologist at the University of California, Riverside, “and these images are obviously a great way to do that.”

#SCAPE2024 @JeffOllerton is talking about the importance of pollinators for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Plants dependent on pollination contribute greatly to global food production and economic wealth. We ❤️ plant-pollinator interactions + welcome all papers on this!

Thrilled to be at #SCAPE2024 in Lofthus, Norway where last night we were treated to the most extraordinary display of northern lights. Such a privilege.
