There's value in folks who find issues with stuff. Being pessimist can be valuable. But being an general contrarian is safe and dumb. Not courageous and wise (as it frequently feels).
@SalvMattera @coco_chatel You know being against everything means you're just an asshole who can feel smug and smart but is helping precisely nothing?

my most christian view is that building systems algorithmically optimising for engagement is literally summoning demons and I mean literally literally

No matter how good you think you feel, PEM is always waiting to drag you back under the waves. There's a creative fire burning inside me but it's trapped. I'm invisible; I'm helpless. I lay in bed and all of the good memories dissolve into mist.

@JameswiseA @mrlundmark @SheriefFYI @HelloWorld4890 Demand excelence from decision makers. Help individuals be the best they can be, even provide constructive feedback (and help if possible). Strive for the highest quality yourself. But don't go out of your way to be an asshole. It. Ain't. Hard.

There are valid reasons not to be fan of big corpos. And big corpos as any (big) structure will produce mediocre (or lesser) results. Some more frequently some less. And arguing online is dumb. That said, here's a list of some cool stuff MSFT folks do :) (to balance the hate)
@SheriefFYI Define competent. For now I'll go with useful and beneficial: evolution of typescript, .net (core, ie the whole modernization), the approach to Roslyn as platform and not just one of compiler, LSP, the whole ecosystem around codepaces, arguably vscode (just consider that everyone

Yet another Vitalik W.
The attacks on Europe I've seen here the last couple of days, including from people I've generally considered interesting and sophisticated, have been getting unhinged... I get that EU has problems - GDPR clickthroughs are dumb, Chat Control is awful, they need to be less

It catches neither all neither frankly most gaps, but it catches different class of issues than me. And to drill into some issues a bit deeper is substantially easier with it. Especially for someone not data-science versed (and thus slow) as I am.

I have a side project of some re-interpretation of biometrics data from Oura ring, etc. and one of the best usages of Claude 4.5 is simply asking it "hey, this result of my data analysis doesn't make sense, explain & cross corelate".

Presence of COI doesn't mean it's a bad. Presence of affiliate doesn't mean the product is being shilled. The affiliate might not be even making money and if it does she deserves it for her information sharing. It should, however, be disclosed. The product ain't cheap.

Apparently politely noting a conflict of interest for a study of a product she has affiliates for (not saying it's also not good product, it likely is) gets you banned with @chydorina I get it can be annoying people noting stuff but it's also expensive stuff and CoI is relevant
@chydorina It's fair to say it's the CEO saying that.

Came across this summary that pulls together some of the recent findings on the links between commonplace (including ostensibly "harmless") pathogens and long-term harm to human health. The war on infectious diseases is far from over!

A good example is the debate on whether ME/CFS is autoimmune or chronic viral. If you lock onto one idea, you risk becoming dogmatic. The truth is likely nuanced and may differ by subgroup or symptom. Both ideas could be right and wrong at the same time.

When people are suffering because the cost of living is too high, and you (as a policymaker) intend to spend public money to fix this, there are two main routes: - subsidize demand, or - subsidize supply Subsidizing demand is "give people money to pay for the expensive thing."
Do you think GDP is an accurate Econ stat in 2025? Mississippi GDP per Capita: $53k Chongqing GDP Per Capita: $14k Mississippi Econ Backbone: Eggs farms and food stamps Chongjing Econ Background: Automotive, Electronics, Defense, semiconductors, high tech, tourism

@dusek_libor Doporučuju si najít co to odkud pochází no free lunch [theorem] a co to říká, a co to mmj. neříká. Realita není zdaleka uniformní sampling _všech možných stavů_ má zjěvně pragmaticky exploitable znalosti což mmj. znamená, že reálně existuje bamilion koláčů "zdarma".

@DavosSafety @GhostOfSocrates @ahandvanish Because progress sa clean air or masks in medical settings helps everyone. So do researchers of LC who might not mask. Yelling into echo chamber that any compromise is as bad as the worst is not helping. Anyone. Ever.

If someone with a new LC case is asking in desperation for suggestions to deal with their life-destroying symptoms, it is fucking stupid, callous, & self-centered to flood their replies with lectures about masking & reinfection. Especially if they said they can’t handle reading
