Sim2Real (pydiffvg to real) gap is super tough. We usually use canvas board to avoid the wet paper buckling. Check out our work, Spline-FRIDA, which learns all those z parameter calibrations automatically. It's still differentiable too.
Trying to translate the strokes I generated with pydiffvg onto paper. And again the difficult part is finding the right z values which depend on the desired stroke width, the correct calibration of the plane and how much the paper starts to buldge when it gets wet.

I sat next to this work all Summer. It was incredible to see what Adam Hung and @UksangYoo were able to accomplish in such a short time with simple hardware (cheap pottery wheel and single, rigid end effector)
Can robots make pottery🍵? Throwing a pot is a complex manipulation task of continuously deforming clay. We will present RoPotter, a robot system that uses structural priors to learn from demonstrations and make pottery @HumanoidsConf @CMU_Robotics 👇 https://t.co/kOvQpkUyY3 1/8🧵

It was a pleasure to visit @UMRobotics and @mavrojean 's class. They had such great questions and very helpful discussions!
It was great to have @PeteyRobots for an engaging guest lecture on robot painting! Not only robots are exciting art tools, but also the process of creating with them uncovers new research challenges. The talk was part of my class on computational HRI: https://t.co/DLTRjZtfcf

Arts, as a domain for Robotics research, appeals to a wide audience. Additionally, problems like robot painting touch upon every major Robotics challenge, making it not only one of the more engaging domains but a fruitful one for performing core Robotics research.

Our ICRA@40 video shows some of the history of robot painting projects, the challenges these roboticists faced, and how they made core contributions to the field of Robotics. It doesn't have to be Robotics for Arts, it can be Arts for Robotics! https://t.co/esiflYuXPu
