Really great to be at the launch of @BuildLocalScot this morning. We don’t have local government in Scotland. People must be empowered & trusted to make decisions about their local communities. We need devolution of power to our communities! #BuildingALocalScotland

The great Bob Fulton has passed away this week at the age of 101. I only got to know him during the last decade of his life, and those years alone could fill up the pages of a wonderfully surreal biography. Bob was larger than life. 1/

Seven ‘local’ councils in Scotland are larger than country of Luxembourg with 12 cantons & 116 councils. Highland is larger than Belgium with a federal gov, 3 regional govs & 581 councils. What Scotland has is not local democracy. Let’s change that.

We see debate as a tool for making decisions, but how we debate truly shapes outcomes. In an increasingly polarised world, our current methods of discussion are hindering our ability to find solutions. So how can we transform our debates: https://t.co/eXkCu9lL4j @PeterMcColl

Today we launched the world’s first citizens’ assembly on trade and climate change. Exciting to have brought 60+ UK citizens together to discuss how the UK government should respond to climate change through its trade policies. (In collaboration with @sbmqmul and @mutual_gain)

Ever since Brexit I’ve wanted to write this book. Very excited that this time next week it will finally be published! We need better stories about who we are than the exceptionalism & imperial nostalgia of the Right. This is hopefully a start https://t.co/2aPOPtQcAA

I'm very sad to hear about the death of the Nobel Prize winning physicist #PeterHiggs. Maybe the biggest privilege of my time as Rector was to meet him. He was one of the kindest people you could meet and a brilliant example of what the 1960s university system could produce.
