Should taxpayers subsidise university spinoff companies? The answer is "yes" for deeptech and biotech companies, but possibly "no" for digital companies. Check out our Research Policy article, just out: https://t.co/l42Yo22mOh. We study University of Californa spinoffs.

This focus on boundary maintenance may come at the expense of innovation and influx of fresh ideas - our prior work indeed suggests that multidisciplinary science often turns out to be more impactful ( https://t.co/9T9NWFKeFE).

But we suggest that in contests that are about admitting candidates to a closed entity, like a discipline, profession or even organization, evaluators discriminate in order to maintain the boundary (and identity) of the entity they are representing.

Our study provides an interesting insight on the "categorical imperative" (the theory that evaluators prefer candidates who fit neatly into a category, e.g. a discipline). Prior work suggested that "mis-fits" are penalized because evaluators are unsure about their quality.

We conducted this analysis using data on evaluation decisions for more than 40,000 academics who competed for habilitation in Italian academia. Our population covers all academic disciplines; decisions were made by panels of senior professors in around 180 disciplines.

This means multidisciplinary scientists face significant hurdles in evaluations critical for their career. Gatekeepers in scientific disciplines may perceive them as threats to the distinctiveness and knowledge domain of the discipline.

Being multidisciplinary can be costly. Discipline gatekeepers penalize multidisciplinary scientists in evaluation contests; in a newly published study, we find the highest performing individuals are penalized the most. https://t.co/tBTjs3Z97A,

Multidisciplinary research is central to solving grand challenges and drives scientific breakthroughs. Yet scientists are punished for doing multidisciplinary work. New study finds highest performing multidisciplinary scientists are punished the most. https://t.co/9CZsFdZWSC
