"In medicine, when a treatment shows this level of benefit, we stop the trial early... When an intervention works this clearly, you change what you do.... It’s time we... start treating [autonomous driving] like a public health intervention that will save lives."

I have a guest essay in @nytimes today about autonomous vehicle safety. I wrote it because I’m tired of seeing children die. Done right, we can eliminate car crashes as a leading cause of death in the United States @Waymo recently released data covering nearly 100 million

My 3yo was struggling mightily with b and d. @mentava updated the software with this belly/diaper heuristic. One hour of hard effort. Now she masters b and d effortlessly, has grown in confidence and starting to understand the power of grit and effort. If you earn in top 5% US,

> "Why is it so hard for my kid to tell b and d apart?" Nothing's wrong, this is normal. EVERY child confuses b and d because of how our brains are wired. Our brains are rotation invariant by default. If a dog runs past you to your right, and then turns around and runs past you

Iga Swiatek hasn't won an event since she came back from her 1 month drugs ban in December. I suspect that Jannik Sinner will also suffer to win events when he returns from his 3 months drugs ban. I don't think either of them getting preferential and short bans will help them.

Contrary to what happens with the median human, it is very fun to give constructive feedback to o3, as it has no ego whatsoever.

But there is nothing preordained by which London/Paris/Madrid/Berlin couldn’t have been a better SV, or Redwood City as beautiful as Bruges or Siena. They’re just failures of imagination and coordination, hopefully temporary.

I am more bullish on the US solving this first, because you can create beauty and health in a more decentralized and experimental way (if you have money), but it is hard to create opportunity and meritocracy from a lousy political foundation.

Lower density in the US helps car primacy, and geography makes stability a larger challenge for Europe. Both can be overcome. The reasons for the respective US and EU weaknesses are cultural, historical, and contingent and can be defeated.

US: we’re much richer! You’re poor EU: but we’re much happier and healthier! One could think that there is an intrinsic tradeoff between the two, but there is not. No reason the US can’t have beautiful cities and healthier people or Europe higher productivity and opportunity.
