Priest of the Church of England. Historian. Liverpudlian. Rector of Liverpool.
Liverpool, England
Joined February 2012
An article I wrote, based on my doctoral research, kindly published in 'Faith & Worship', Trinity 2018. It's about the birth of English Protestantism, and the relationship between a Reformed liturgy, almsgiving, & the deep foundations of our Welfare State:

An enjoyable read on the writing style of AI, using words like "delve" to make itself sound clever, with enfeebled effect. A far cry from John Ball's direct question, in the 1381 Peasants' Revolt "When Adam delved and Eve span, who was then the gentleman?" https://t.co/wFruxt8E2e

Holy Innocents 2025 "there is hope for your future, says the Lord: your children shall come back to their own country" Jeremiah 31.17
At our Parish Eucharist this morning, we remembered the Holy Innocents & all children who live their lives surrounded by war & uncertainty. We continue to pray for them & all who care for them. The sermon preached by @P_G_Anderson is on our website https://t.co/IelchmKenE

20,000 poor Victorian Liverpudlians were sent specially commissioned hot-pots on Christmas Day by the Lord Mayor, to their homes, prepared by cooks off the ocean liners, in a compelling reminder of the city's deeply Lancastrian DNA, and the immense wealth of its merchant princes.

Christmas Day 2025 Officiated at the service for HMP Liverpool, inviting the prisoners to imagine themselves part of the Nativity story again, as men drawn to Christ's Light. We sang Silent Night and In the Bleak Midwinter.

"I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a school-boy. I am as giddy as a drunken man. A merry Christmas to every-body! A happy New Year to all the world!" If you haven't had the pleasure, watch Alistair Sims play Scrooge during the coming 12 days.

Christmas Eve is quiet in the commercial district around @LiverpoolParish, but the church is open and people are coming to pray. Remembering my old colleagues @LivCathedral and especially @LivCathChoir who will be singing to thousands at the many carol services up the hill today.

On Christmas Day I'm going to HMP Liverpool - a large Victorian men's prison. Currently there's no Church of England chaplain. It'll be an honour to share the Gospel and Holy Communion there, on the day of Christ's birth with the prisoners. Praying for wisdom for my brief sermon.

Islamists based in Wigan planned the worst terrorist attack in British history on Greater Manchester's Jews. That they were foiled by a Muslim undercover police officer is hopeful, but we all need to be serious about this ongoing threat, an affront to God. https://t.co/p97vuJUljN

Nine Lessons and Carols @LiverpoolParish I gave the bidding "Beloved in Christ, be it this Christmastide our care & delight to hear again the message of the angels, & in heart & mind to go even unto Bethlehem & see this thing which is come to pass, & the Babe lying in a manger."

We held a carol service for Merseyside's St John Ambulance yesterday @LiverpoolParish, yards away from Water St, where May's LFC victory parade was violated by Paul Doyle driving into the crowd. Teenage @stjohnambulance volunteers helped bring about a miracle whereby no-one died.

Tonight I'm attending a concert @LiverpoolMet, where a new setting of a C15 lyric, honouring Mary, "There is no rose of such virtue", will be sung for the first time. Written by Rob Howard, a friend from when I was a curate in Prescot, Lancs (2005-9) and dedicated to me. Laus Deo

Rector of Liverpool, as of tonight, in a lovely Induction service @LiverpoolParish. It was very poignant to be formally led to my stall by my old friend @therealsjpf, as we sang Jerusalem. I'm humbled to have been entrusted with the spiritual care of the heart of this great city.

This year I was diagnosed with dangerously high blood pressure: hypertension. I'm now on medication, have taken up porridge and adopted the simple 1950s Royal Canadian Air Force daily 11 minute exercise programme, 5BX, which I commend, having studied to be effete since childhood.
