I began my #caesarean birth work in 2001, and took unpaid leave from @BBCNews in 2006 to attend the @NIH State-of-the-Science Conference on Cesarean Delivery on Maternal Request and contribute to its statement. I never imagined women would still be contacting me for help in 2021.

"Maternal choice matters. The @AusBirthTrauma says ‘we need to stop infantilising women and we need to actually empower women with information'. We aspire to see care move from ‘normal birth’ to normalising maternal choice at birth". 👏🏼

Striking findings. ‘The politics of childbirth make informed discussions almost impossible. It is crazy that the most dangerous thing that a woman and child are likely to attempt is not discussed in detail."

Importantly, though, women should not be pressured to have a planned #caesarean if they would prefer to plan a vaginal birth.

Planned birth (both caesarean and IOL) at 39 weeks versus expectant management in low-risk women reduces perinatal mortality and other severe adverse outcomes. Strongest neonatal and maternal safety benefits seen with planned caesarean birth. https://t.co/bw0X7Ptz4f

There 'is' evidence to support normal/natural/vaginal birth. I criticize studies ignoring intention to treat principles (in birth mode comparisons), but perceptions of safety and tolerance of risks can differ. Maternity services need to inform, listen and support all. #caesarean

It’s striking how often NHS scandals arise from a clash between evidence & ideology. Think Tavistock, think maternity. So we have the difficult task of resisting campaigners who, however well-intentioned, are not objective. There is no place for ideology in health care.

I'm not convinced a national inquiry is the best way forward. @wesstreeting @theodoraclarke Taking years; costing ++£s (with £58.5bn already projected for current maternity claims); no guarantees; & so much existing data is not acted on. Why? https://t.co/17hWJmC0I1 #caesarean
