❝One of the challenges we face in fact-checking is that we don't have good data that demonstrates at a large scale the consequences that misinformation causes. Claim Review is a structured data project in which fact-checkers identify claims they check and the findings they

The goals of fact-checking & media literacy are being misrepresented by those who spread false information. Here, @guyberger & I argue we need a new framing showing not just what we are *against* - but what we are *for*: "information integrity". https://t.co/EDh2R7Q0Xy

Timely reminder. @TomRosenstiel: “Misinformation is not like plumbing, a problem you fix. It is a social condition, like crime, that you must constantly monitor and adjust to” Or let's accept, schools fail so stop teaching, crime happens so no police... https://t.co/YKlNTJYlAO

Realised today just how rarely I now use this platform. Once, it was once possible to see a wide range of views and useful information. Now - just endless one-sided promotion of its billionnaire owner's political views. "Sad", as someone might say.

In 2017, I asked for support to help @AfricaCheck build up a community to fight for information integrity on the continent. [@ShuttleworthFdn - looking at you] Was thrilled to be in Ghana this month to witness this 👇
1/ 🌍 50 African Fact-Checking Organisations Unite! At the #AfricaFactsSummit2024, fact-checkers from more than 30 African countries signed the Accra Declaration on Information Integrity & Resilience. Their mission? Tackle misinformation & build trust across Africa.

A first generation of fact-checkers started with @factcheckdotorg in 2003 - a year before social media was a thing @AfricaCheck started in 2012 checking claims made in print and broadcast media and offline settings… Then in 2016 things changed … Maybe time to change back?
Completely agree with this take @Sander_vdLinden @YaraKyrychenko @_JenAllen @DG_Rand! 🙌(see my take in the correspondence in @Nature). We need to consider misleading info from mainstream media to a much greater extent. Great to see the field moving towards this perspective.

An important study for those concerned with, & critical of, efforts to counter false information. It's why asymetric misinformation requires 'due', not false, balance👇 This is as true in other countries & contexts (think India or Brazil, as examples) as it is in the US, too.
🚨Out in Nature!🚨 Many (eg Trump JimJordan @elonmusk) have accused social media of anti-conservative bias Is this accurate? We test empirically - and it's more complicated than you might think: conservatives ARE suspended more, but also share more misinfo https://t.co/xVcTUDdCEx
