significant soil organic carbon (SOC) losses, with highest loss in cropland (-33.2%), while conversion from forests to pasture increases SOC (+9.1%). SOC changes are influenced by land-use type & time since conversion, emphasising need for monitoring in land management (2/2)

New paper: trees host microbes that take up methane from the atmosphere. This novel finding is exciting and opens up many new avenues of research into the importance of earth’s trees for our rapidly changing climate.
The carbon storage benefit of trees has long been known. Our new paper in @Nature led by @GauciGauci suggests an unexpected additional climate benefit: tree bark hosts microbes that gobble up #methane. Explainer thread below and paper link here:

Great first day @theATBC. @ymalhi @_h_zhang and @KerryAGrey presented on ecosystem energetics, using AI to create digital maps for Africa in the past, and the response of savannas trees to climate change. @nicola_stvns hosted a symposium on long term vegetation plots #atbc2024

Congratulations @HaoranW78247217 @CDahlsjo and @ymalhi on your ash dieback paper @WythamWoods. Using evidence-based modelling they show that ash dieback will continue over the next decade, w/ 26% decline if the no. of resistant trees does not increase. https://t.co/iqhXPEhkOV

Last week @ymalhi travelled to Greenland for our new @NERCscience project. Read about it below 👇🏼
Our new @NERCscience project in Greenland looks at how large animal wildlife (musk ox and reindeer) affect the carbon cycle and climate resilience of the Arctic tundra. We will work with long term exclosures that have kept out these animals from small areas for decades

An absolutely fascinating talk from @sdiazecology on where we’re going with plant functional trait research. If you missed it, you can now watch it on @NatureRecovery YouTube page.

We are hiring! How can we measure the ecological health and functionality of savanna ecosystems? How do we define degradation and nature recovery in such ecosystems? New postdoc position - a partnership between @NaturalStateOrg and @NatureRecovery : https://t.co/PYWwKAGtjr

In Greenland this week to set up our new @NERCscience project on the impact of large herbivores on the climate resilience of the Arctic tundra with Marc Macias and @Jeep4byFour. But first a hike to pay respects to the vast silent hulk of the Greenland Ice Sheet

Where have we come from and where are we going with plant functional trait research? Tomorrow @sdiazecology will be sharing her unique perspective of the plant phenotype, with insights into avenues of future research and areas that may be dead ends at @oxfordgeography

So what's your take on Planetary Boundaries - best thing since sliced bread, or a barrier to greater action? Join us on 23 May, in Oxford or online, for what I hope and expect will be a lively discussion. It's easy to register here: https://t.co/wcXizVJN3d
