“Fires can escape their intended boundaries and invade forest areas if fuel is dry enough to allow fires to spread, which is becoming increasingly common due to heatwaves and severe droughts caused by climate change”

A ban is far too simple an answer to a very complex problem. "It proves that the complexities of the type of fire in the Amazon need to be taken into account when designing a strategy." https://t.co/0LYnqN1cCb @AneAlencar3 @silva_sonaira

This year, both the Pantanal and the Amazon have recorded alarming rates of burning, with the wetland breaking recent records that caused an international uproar.

For the next burning season: the combo of a vulnerable dry vegetation caused by the El Niño-driven drought with fuel build up from high deforestation (yes, there was a drop, but it needs to drop more) can create catastrophic fires IF ignition sources are not severely controlled.

…they must be accompanied by long-term, multi-sector and well thought out strategies that understand the different motivations that lead to each fire type. ( https://t.co/JUM4S1gr7h)

This article clarifies the different types of fire in the Amazon, their different drivers and the positive feedbacks that can lead to more fires in the region. It then explores evidence regarding...

Turns out that in 2019 the ban reduced fire numbers to expected levels based on our climate-driven predictions, but it was largely ineffective in 2020 and 2021. Multiple reasons are likely behind this, but crucially: Emergency measures can be useful in moments of crisis, BUT…

A fire ban was issued and despite not knowing well if it worked as intended, it was repeated in 2020 and 2021. Here we assess the effectiveness of those bans in reducing fire numbers in the Amazon, and if they varied according to fire type (defo, pasture and forest) and regions.

It seems that the whole world got worried, creating intense media coverage and a lot of pressure on the Brazilian government to act fast to protect the largest tropical rainforest in the world. ( https://t.co/w7EOWkHtB4)

Deforestation matters for climate. If #deforestation were a country it would be the third highest emitter in the world. Globally we have destroyed one-third of forests, and the rate of destruction remains high.
