Schools are being swamped with pupils leaving the private sector, pushing them beyond their capacity. I remember during the election when we were told this wouldn't happen.

Interestingly, salaried school-direct training and apprenticeships achieved both the highest rates of QTS and those in employment 16 months on. Meanwhile, fee-funded university routes produced amongst the lowest. Teaching is best learnt on the job, not in a lecture hall.
The number of post-grad teacher trainees achieving QTS has decreased according to the latest data - over 1k fewer than the previous year. It's estimated that the proportion of those trainees teaching in state schs in 16 months time will also decrease - ~1k fewer. Deary me.

This is absolutely correct ⬇️. Our society's culture of entitlement has to change. Endless tax rises are not the answer. ✂️✂️✂️.
Time for everyone to stop pretending we can have our cake and eat it. There will have to be some really difficult conversations, esp about spending on the elderly. Expect further attempts to avoid this (radical left and nativist right).

A fantastic thread. Please read 👏👏.
@PJTheEconomist there's so much I could write about your horrible post piling on independent school kids along with Sam Freedman. I've chosen a couple of highlights and welcome your response. (won't get one from Freedman, he blocks anyone that disagrees).

The outgoing leader of the @NASUWT has again warned the government about the "surge" in redundancies seen in 2025, whilst the incoming lead has criticised Labour for taking "no serious action" on teacher recruitment and retention.

There were more school staff redundancies recorded in the first three months of 2025 than there were in the entirety of 2024. Far from putting more teachers at the front of classrooms, @UKLabour are worsening the staffing crisis in schools.

If you'd like to read a breakdown of the pitiful 'analysis' presented by Mr Freedman, I suggest you read the below 🧵 that highlights many of the inaccuracies and falsehoods ⬇️.
@Samfr Thoroughly enjoyed reading your analysis, Sam. Always great to hear from ex private school boys happily enjoying the fruits of their education and deciding to kick the ladder away for others. Note that you will join ex private school boys Starmer & Corbyn. Couple of points 🧵.

Get your bingo cards at the ready everyone. • Ignore the data and evidence ✅. • Blame the 'right wing press' ✅. • Describe parents & educators as "lobbying" ✅. This 'analysis' is a blueprint for how not to do an analysis - it's inaccurate, lazy and reductionist.
New post just out:. "The Great VAT Panic". The claims made by the right-wing press about VAT on private school fees were wildly wrong. Why? What are the lessons about about (how not to) run a lobbying campaign? And what can government learn?. (£/free).
