One, tiniest sliver of good news.
Slotkin '98 is the 1st Cornellian elected to the U.S. Senate since Mark Kirk '81 (R-IL), who finished the final month's of Obama's senate term and then served one full term from 2010 to 2017. Slotkin is only the fifth Cornell graduate (seventh Cornellian) to serve in the senate.

Ranked choice is one of my favorite things about voting in Maine.
Bad night for RCV: Statewide measures to change elections systems to ranked choice lost in CO, OR, ID. It also lost in Nevada, where it won in 2022 but had to pass again. It did, however, pass in Washington, D.C. Its fate in Alaska remains unknown.

I was genuinely impressed with the extent of abnormally dry conditions yesterday (not surprised given the pattern lately), so I'm glad to see this is in fact a record for the product.
Stats on the now record-setting Fall 2024 drought. 48 states have some drought, most in #DroughtMonitor history. 87.2% of the Lower 48 and 73.2% of the US are Abnormally Dry (D0) or in drought, both #DroughtMonitor records. @NOAA

Seriously, look at how terrain locked that convection is. Nearly stationary. And a nice above anvil cirrus plume to boot (evidence of severe weather in addition to the flooding rain).
12 to 17 UTC loop of Sandwich (combination of IR and VIS imagery) based on the FCI from yesterday's extremely severe storm.

Quick research led me to gossamer or "goose summer" because of the time of year goose were eaten. Now refers to something thin, light, delicate - much like late fall warmth. Etymology is fun, or maybe midnights are getting to me.
@KeithCarson FWIW @ametsoc recommends dropping its use in favor of second summer.
