Today I told my students I won’t be their teacher in January, which was way sadder than I expected. But the good news - that I’ll be a Creative Writing Lecturer at
@LancasterUni
from next month - is really, really exciting 😊
Once when I was teaching, the room full of teenage boys decided to try to guess - entirely unprompted - where I bought my clothes. They arrived quite quickly at the right answer (UniQlo) but not before someone suggested WHSmith?? Lord have mercy, I was HUMBLED
I’m in the early stages of writing Book 3, and I’m remembering that the hardest thing about trying to write a good book is that you have to write it badly first.
I'm so thrilled and proud to have been shortlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize for THE PRIVATE JOYS OF NNENNA MALONEY. I couldn't be happier to be on the shortlist with these two writers. What wonderful news at this dark time!
We’re delighted to reveal the Desmond Elliott Prize 2020 shortlist! 🎉🎉🎉 Congratulations to our selected writers
@abidare_author
@NzeluWrites
& Derek Owusu. The
#DEP20
winner will be revealed on 2 July
Just ate a burrito an hour before the function this evening because they’ve said there’ll be food but you never know much or when and baby I’ve been hurt before
People of colour don’t always feel empowered to publicly challenge racism, because of racist backlash. So when those people of colour do stand up for what’s right and we are ignored, dismissed or patronised it’s particularly confusing/shocking.
What fantastic news in these dark times - I’ve won a Betty Trask Award/been shortlisted for the Betty Trask Prize! I’m humbled to be listed with such talented writers. It’s like a dream come true.

Forgive me

I don’t like to play favourites with my houseplants but this is my favourite. Ladies, you’re looking at a calamondin orange tree - the fruit is inedible but super pretty, and the blossoms make my living room smell AMAZING.
You guys... the paperback of NNENNA MALONEY is out in *now*! That also means it's been just over a year since
@dialoguebooks
published it in hardback in 2019 🤯 Here's a pic of me, happy because I saw the hardback in

Ok so something upsetting just happened to me and my friend. It was over three hours ago now but I’m still really upset by it to the point where I’m physically a bit shaky. 1/24
So today was a fun day - I just finished filming a conversation with
@GylesB1
for a C5 documentary about Jane Austen! Like everyone else, he was very complimentary about my glasses. Doc airs in November!

⚡ A hilarious and heart-warming novel set in Manchester about a half-Nigerian teen searching for the answer to that essential question: Who am I? Out 3rd October 📅
This past week has been INCREDIBLE and I have SO enjoyed getting to launch my book but honestly for the next few hours the ONLY thing I will do is eat vegan sausages and watch Charmed
I cheated slightly on this one (got deboned and de-skinned chicken breast - I know, I know) but still,
@Nigella_Lawson
’s one-pot chicken with harissa and sweet potatoes is ticking *several* of my boxes
Thanks
@WomensPrize
for inviting me to the lovely ceremony last night - huge congratulations to Susanna Clarke and all the shortlisted writers!

Podcast idea: each episode, a different editor talks about their work on a great book. Might be totally unworkable (privacy), but I’d love to listen to it.
This moved me in ways, and with a depth, that I am not often moved. Thank you for sharing this moment in your life,
@jasebyjason
. I hope a lot of young black queers - and their parents - read this important story.
So on Thursday, my 2nd novel,
#HereAgainNow
, is published in paperback: . It’s about love between Black men - good & bad, fulfilling & disappointing. Writing & publishing this book has been such a journey, and I’d like to thank a few people
So I got an amazing delivery from
@WritersCentre
today...
Thank you so much! And huge thanks to my agent Cara, and to
@SharLovegrove
and her incredible team at
@dialoguebooks
I can’t wait to work with you on book 2!
I’ve probably tweeted this before, but a friend of mine suggested saving a small amount every time you get a rejection. After enough rejections you can buy yourself something as a reward for your resilience
A little thread - I was sorting out my inbox and I found a rejection email from an agent. They said that my writing was ‘vivid & engaging’ but my story wasn’t ‘exciting.’ Well, 6 months later, 3 agents wanted to sign me and 7 months after that ‘rejection’ email...(1/2)
I’m really proud and excited to be one of the judges for the PFD Queer Fiction Prize, working with my agent
@CaraLeeSimpson
. Queers: it’s your time to shine.
@PFDAgents

I think…the man opposite me on the train just used “I’m so sorry I forgot my face mask” as a pickup line for the woman next to him?? Like, he used it as an opener. He’s asking about her job now.
I’ve never noticed this door in Manchester Central Library before. I’be decided it leads to a room where they keep the magic books. Yep, that’s what it’ll be.
I just declined an offer of work I would have loved but which I knew I didn’t have time to do, and didn’t immediately burst into flames?? This…will change everything.

Back in the office and I am welcomed by (a) snow and (b) much more happily, a proof of

! Thank you so much for this copy (and the macarons). I will be enjoying both treats asaptually
I try not to moan bc by and large I feel happy & lucky to do the work I do. But I’ve published two novels about Black British people, both reviewed (often v nicely) in many major national papers. But never once (afaik) by a Black person in a national paper.
