After campaigning for a Freelancer Commissioner, we are delighted that this year the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has announced it will appoint a ‘Creative Freelance Champion’. We’re currently working with others in the sector to help shape the role!

Day 11 of #ALCSAdvent! In June, we attended the ALCS-sponsored CLiPPA awards where Colette Hiller was announced as the winner. Hiller won for her collection ‘Colossal Words for Kids’ where she defines in rhyme 75 ‘colossal’ words that children can use in their everyday lives 📖

Day 10 of #ALCSAdvent! In March, we were delighted to appoint Lord Tim Clement-Jones as Chair of the ALCS Board, who brings extensive political experience and expertise in areas like intellectual property, technology and AI.

Day 9 of #ALCSAdvent! Throughout the year, our staff took part in team days where we discussed ideas for the future of ALCS and participated in professional growth workshops. We’re proud to have such a fantastic team and we can’t wait to see what 2026 has in store for us!

Day 8 of #ALCSAdvent! We were proud to support the National Reading Championship Quiz hosted by the @Literacy_Trust! Our team had the exciting role of choosing the winner of the Copyright Challenge poster competition and presenting the award to the winner 🏆

Day 7 of #ALCSAdvent! Earlier this year, we submitted a response to the government consultation on AI and copyright. We insisted on the need for transparency, argued against a copyright exception, and shared guidance to help our members have their say 📣

Day 6 of #ALCSAdvent! In April, we joined @Soc_of_Authors outside Meta's offices to protest the use of pirated works to train their AI models. We'll continue working with our partners to ensure creators' voices are heard in the year ahead!

It’s day three of #ALCSAdvent! We were proud to see our work referenced in numerous parliamentary debates and committee meetings throughout this year! Here, MP Alison Hume speaks about our role in helping to ensure creators are paid for uses of their work.

Speaking about her recent research at the @APPGWriters Winter Reception, @clemi_collett: "Most novelists report that they know their works have been used to train gen AI models. Of these, 99% reported they did not give permission and 100% report that they weren't remunerated."

ALCS Chair @TimClementJone1: "Copyright is an asset, not an input to be taken advantage of. We need a regime based on transparency, licensing and choice. The aim must be a settlement where creators are confident their rights will be respected."
