Happy #indieanimationday From '01-'09 I created a feature film titled Elysian Tail with some cleanup help from my wife. I finished a third of it before taking a break to make video games and sadly haven't gone back. This is the only footage I've released, for Dust's postmortem.

While working on Dust I took a two year hiatus from playing any other video game, mostly out of necessity. Demons Souls launched during that time and I was so enamored by the design. Playing that was my reward to myself after such a strenuous crunch. It was worth it.

I feel like there are only a handful of modern comic artists that had worldwide recognition like Akira Toriyama. I was a big fan of his video game work; Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon. RIP to the master.

I've spent the last 3 weeks creating what I consider to be the most important asset of the game. The fact I waited this long might seem odd but I finally felt ready, and I'm pretty happy with this personal milestone.

I've now been been working on my next game full-time for a year. Mostly spent researching, building tech and creating a workflow. I've generated a single finished asset - a rock texture. And even that probably won't make it into the final product.

As an imposter artist and programmer myself, I have one thing to say about AI art. I hope that a budding artist somewhere has not been dissuaded from learning their craft. Heaven forbid this also happens to musicians and writers. Your creation is beautiful and worth persuing.

Being a solo developer running your own business is impossibly difficult. Often times I think I'd just rather find security at some large studio, but then I see stuff like this Activision news. This is not an easy industry to be a part of.

What's surprised me through all this is how much trust people put into these companies. Maybe I'm just old and jaded, but I don't trust Autodesk, or Adobe, or Unity, or whatever. They are there to profit from me and if I find their tools useful, I'll reciprocate.

I've been fortunate to have tested a number of great 2D games. Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Axiom Verge, Salt&Sanctuary, Ori. Each succeeded well beyond my expectations. The latest of these is @mattwhitedev 's Ghost Song. An amazingly atmospheric game, congrats on the upcoming launch!

I'll never forget when the Giant Bomb crew checked out Dust in Microsoft's booth at PAX '12, giving me a shoutout at their show that evening. That got the ball rolling in a major way, and from then on lines were absolutely packed.

I appreciate the honesty of my children who know just enough of the dev process. "Does that look bad because it's not finished?" I respond with "Um, yeah, that's it," and then proceed to reopen and fix the file.

I still use my launch Xbox 360 gamepad, the one I developed all of Dust with. The thumbsticks are incredibly smooth, and a little shredded where our guinea pig chewed through them.

Never Stop Sneakin' was a fun experiment. I learned Unity, worked with a new aesthetic (and dimension), and tried to focus on pure simple design. While not the huge success that Dust was, the experience was invaluable.
