In a tour de force, Oriana Robinson then discovered that HexR was essential for cell filamentation (elongation), a feature that is critical for Vibrio fitness in chitinaceous environments.

We also found that the HexR gene regulator is essential to support efficient growth, biofilm formation and cell motility when chitin is the sole carbon source.

OprD type porins usually import COOH compounds so this was somewhat unexpected. We confirmed the localization of this porin to the outer membrane and show its functionality in chitin mediated cell growth

A single channel OprD-like outer membrane porin was found to be critical for the import chitooligosaccharides. This 'new' porin is structurally distinct from the well known ChiP trimeric porin found in all Vibrios!

Tn-seq allowed us to take a deep genome wide dive into chitin growth fitness determinants. Along with validating known chitin associated genes, we found some really interesting new linkages

If you've induced phages, you may have wondered if you can do the 'opposite' - block entry into lysogeny. You can, using protein synthesis inhibitors! Better still, this yields a potent synergy, functionally turning a temperate phage into a virulent one. https://t.co/nkLBhPL1XD
