So much unpaid work in academia. When I realised this two years into my career, I started making better decisions in respect to where and how I published
Academic publishing is perhaps the greatest scam perpetrated on intelligent people 1) Write grants (unpaid) 2) Do research 3) Write papers 4) Peer review (unpaid) 5) PAY up to $12K to publish 6) Need publications to get grants (back to step 1) Publishers: 38% profit margins

Finishing a PhD isn’t about being the smartest, it’s about staying consistent, showing up on the days you don’t feel like it, and refusing to quit. Your future self is waiting on the other side of that final chapter. Keep pushing. You’re closer than you think.

There is more to publications than meets the eye. Most times you see multiple authors on a journal article, one or two people did the work. It is frustrating and it seems to be worse in developing countries
my girlfriend wrote a research paper - she did 99% of the work the professor took the paper, added 7 other professors to the work, 1 btech student, 1 phd and 1 mtech student as co-authors - which was never informed to my girlfriend today was the camera-ready deadline, and she

I totally agree. Career progression is the number one reason many people do research
The majority of PhDs I’ve seen at top schools showed little true passion for research. Most were there for other reasons - immigration pathways, career credentials, networking, or simply a comfortable position with modest responsibilities. Increasingly, many drifted into campus
