PFHEA, NTF, Professor of Natural Sciences Education at Exeter. All thoughts are my own. If you can't find me I'm probably on Dartmoor with the family.
Joined February 2020
The end of term is near, everyone is tired and feeling a bit frazzled so I asked our first years to tell me the best things about their time in Exeter so far. They queued up to tell us 🥰 #FeelGoodFriday

IMPORTANT PLS SHARE. It's rumoured the English £9,250 tuition fee cap may be raised this pm for the 1st time in 8yrs, as University's finances are strained. As student finance misunderstandings abound, I've bashed out a few notes to help... 1. Higher tuition fees WON'T change

Really proud of the work we're doing @UniofExeter to do just this, putting specialist pastoral mentors in as core parts of departmental tutoring teams. An effective personal academic tutor system may require specialist academic support https://t.co/3OYuA4sFcC via @wonkhe

Contradictory political agendas can lead to a tightrope walk between politics/regulation and the desire of most in HE to raise standards and support every student to achieve their potential and overcome structural barriers they may have experienced.

We're rightly pushed to narrow awarding gaps but that could lead to more 1st class degrees, or do we downgrade other students in the name of equality? Is it possible that equality of access and opportunity might lead to more good outcomes? In fact is that not desirable?

An important discussion of 'unexplained grade inflation'. If outcome is determined simply by intake grades, institution type and other fixed factors then why do all the hard work of teaching and assessment?

Not my normal topic but genuinely one of the best things we've watched for years. Not just for the cricket but showing what it means to be a teenage boy, how hard growing up can be but also how much hope and potential there is in those boys and so many others.
Thanks for watching a special group of lads 💥 @kylehogg22

I'm sure it says something about me that I'm nearly as excited about receiving the final proofs of our soon to be published manuscript on student support, as I am about picking up my new car today. It's been an exciting day all round!

This is the most important piece of work I've been involved with over many years @UniofExeter. I'm hugely proud of what we are doing, and we have a fabulous team.
