Old network problem: 1997. We had to bulk-order 3Com 10Base-T NICs and install them in Micron desktops. All plugged into a giant HUB. Got a batch of 20 NICs that all had the SAME MAC ADDRESS. Imagine the chaos on a huge collision/broadcast domain, with 20 duplicate MACs mixed in.

Today's lesson: Don't assume Layer 1 is OK just because you have link lights or even activity lights. This was the root cause of a major problem today. Pin 2 of an older Cat6 keystone in a patch panel failed. That's BI_DA- in 1000Base-T, or Transm- in 10/100Base-T. ---🧵

Opinions? Is this a “fair” Network Engineering interview test/exercise? Not the diagram itself, but the concept: Kind of like the old CCNP TSHOOT test, I present the candidate with a virtual network that’s broken in a couple ways and needs a couple configuration additions: (1/5)

This annoys me. Someone legitimately asking a question, and while there's a bunch of replies with accurate to semi-accurate answers, there's some smart-ass responses too. Just answer the question and support folks as they grow in this industry. This stuff is confusing as it is.
