One of the nicest Gaelic words for snow has no direct equivalent in English. It is generally applicable only in very cold weather, when spiandagan (a few snowflakes floating in the wind) are to be seen. If snow is falling very lightly, it's tha e a’ spianadh an t-sneachda.

Q. Why does ptarmigan begin with that weird P, when its name comes from the #Gaelic , tàrmachan? A. In the 1600s some busybody believing the word derived from the Greek ptero (“feather” or “wing”), stuck it there to reflect the origin it doesn't have. #NatureScot #etymology

Cow seals feed their pups with rich fatty milk for 16-21 days during which the pup will gain an average of 30kg. After that the pup will moult and the mother will leave as her youngster becomes independent - often at less than 3 weeks old! @BBCSpringwatch #Autumnwatch
