@AliceFromQueens Going to disagree-I think contemporary thought is more important, it’s just the wrong stuff. I’d take Deutsch and Penrose over much of Aristotle, though Plato and Shakespeare are hard to beat and still deserve to be widely read. No reason to teach Marx, Butler, and many others.

clearly because scientists are so at home with ambiguity, indeterminacy, spontaneity - you all are so go-with-the-flow, it's humbling to hear you speak off the cuff - makes us reconsider our life choices.
Why do academics in the humanities read their papers aloud, word for word, when they give talks at universities or at meetings, while scientists generally speak extemporaneously? If you read, you might as well just hand out the paper. It's a mystery.
