Yoko crocheting blindfolded onstage (as if playing an instrument) during a performance of Instant Karma is laughably pretentious and yet somehow transcendent - the way she pulls off stuff like that (the way she's able to unironically *move*) is astounding - 🖤🖤 her so much

no reason to teach Marx, Butler. "Deutsch" & "Penrose"

@AliceFromQueens Going to disagree-I think contemporary thought is more important, it’s just the wrong stuff. I’d take Deutsch and Penrose over much of Aristotle, though Plato and Shakespeare are hard to beat and still deserve to be widely read. No reason to teach Marx, Butler, and many others.

Historically, the oppressed have. risen against their masters. But today the oppressed have been expelled and survive at a great distance from their oppressors. the "oppressor" is increasingly a complex system that combines persons, networks, and machines with no obvious center.

"Fragments are the panned gold of the discontinuous. Whether glimpsed under the currents of prolonged historical disintegration or within the swell of semantic over-abundance, once sieved, they can be gathered, assembled.". @TobiasvRyan on my favorite book.

we already have an invidious, childish, asinine award system (for "artistic excellence" lmao) - why not let the contestants vie on a reality show or have minor and major tournaments like golf?.

clearly because scientists are so at home with ambiguity, indeterminacy, spontaneity - you all are so go-with-the-flow, it's humbling to hear you speak off the cuff - makes us reconsider our life choices.

Why do academics in the humanities read their papers aloud, word for word, when they give talks at universities or at meetings, while scientists generally speak extemporaneously? If you read, you might as well just hand out the paper. It's a mystery.
