I am so humbled, honored, and excited to be the new Director of the National Weather Service! I commit to support our incredibly dedicated workforce & serve our emergency management, media, & public & private sector partners. Follow me as we go through this journey together.
@NWS
After a rewarding career in meteorology spanning 50 years, I will retire on Jan. 1. It has been my greatest honor to lead NWS for nearly 9 years. NWS has the most dedicated cadre of public servants, and I am proud to have served the Nation alongside them.
It was 148 years ago today, on February 9, 1870, that the National Weather Service was "born" when President Ulysses S. Grant signed a joint resolution of Congress authorizing the secretary of war to establish a weather service under the U.S. Army Signal Service.
#NWShistory
A violent tornado was on the ground for over 30 miles last evening and there were NO reported fatalities. Our partners in the media and local emergency management helped us get the message out and people made the right decisions. THIS is what a Weather-Ready Nation looks like.
Our KS storm damage survey team is back and here are the preliminary results:
An EF-4

Caught this lightning strike from my office window this afternoon. Glad to be inside! Whenever you can see lightning or hear thunder, you're at risk of being struck. When thunder roars, go (or stay) indoors!
I managed to snap this lucky shot of lightning near the U.S. Capitol today while heading to a meeting. This is a good time to remind everyone that - like I did - when you see a flash, dash inside!
