The Ceann Comhairle @SOFearghail_TD in his opening address at this Symposium when speaking about the lack of diversity in politics, highlighted the need to improve the numbers of Travellers, migrants and people from poorer social-economic backgrounds.
The Ceann Comhairle, @SOFearghail_TD, is today hosting a Parliamentary Symposium on Enhancing Participation in Public Life and Politics at @dublincastleopw. Keynote speakers are @furkankarayel @TheHarryMcC and @DARollins #seeforyourself. https://t.co/bxNix8gYMd

Excellent launch of important research: ethnic minority women & local politics. Given the scale of the challenges - clear role that adult & #communityeducation can play in supporting the recommendations. #FET #DifferentPaths #MoreWomen

It is way past time political parties started to invest in Traveller women and all marginalised women. #DifferentPaths
For Traveller and some black women, community activism was more likely to be in service of their own communities. Much of this work is less recognised as leadership or political work and is not usually where political parties look to when recruiting candidates. #DifferentPaths

Really interesting hearing the difficult first hand experience of ethnic minority women who have run for election in Ireland. More support needed in terms of training, support and finance as well as a ‘nested quota’. Stronger hate laws key for stopping abuse. #DifferentPaths

Really important to hear the barriers for minoritised women engaging in electoral politics. @NTWFIRL @AkiDwA
For Traveller, Roma & Black women racialised identities carry specific penalties - all migrant women experience forms of racialised & racist abuse. Experiences of abuse include racism and sexism on & offline, sustained ‘in person’ racist & sexist harassment, abuse & intimidation

Remove barriers to voter registration for Traveller, Roma & other ethnic minorities as well as comprehensive voter registration & awareness campaigns Implement hate crime/speech legislation & provide for anti-racism & anti-sexism media codes of practice #DifferentPaths

Other supports needed include provision of basic wage by State for minoritized female for duration of election campaign & childcare support Provision of inclusive leadership, training & support programmes by political parties also critical #DifferentPaths

Increasing minoritised women’s inclusion in local politics requires confronting sexism, racism and other forms of discrimination. Combating underrepresentation of minoritized women demands specific and targeted measures including nested quotas #DifferentPaths

Parties have demonstrated intent to ‘diversify’ & improve outreach however, anti-racism not yet core organisational capacity of parties. For some parties existing gender quota is ongoing challenge that supersedes efforts to attract more diverse candidates. #DifferentPaths
