A game of musical chairs with concentration camps; demographics and the middle classes. Don't worry, it all turns out well in the end (sorta).

The purpose of Bunreacht and particularly the courts is to regulate a complex and ever shifting complex system, and ensure a complex network of systems operates fairly for citizens. As soon as politicians start trying to exempt bits from that, you know they're up to no good.

Ireland as a complex system of systems: Most people talk about Ireland as if it were a fixed object. A country with clear edges, a stable institutional shape, and a predictable internal structure. That picture is comforting, but it is not accurate. Ireland functions as a complex

Sadly I have received another report of more damage in Cork from the thunderstorms that hit Sunday night along with a downburst wind. This home and neighboring property in Unionhall Cork were badly damaged. A weather station in Ringaskiddy did record a sudden and dramatic wind

Portuguese, French and PSNI anti-drone police units deployed in Dublin during Zelenskyy visit. Over 100 years after independence, the State still can not provide a basic level of defence and remains dependent on the kindness of others. Unacceptable.

I was on a residential course in the US for work. One day, my boss in Ireland rang me for help at 8am. Sorting out the problem took more than an hour, so I was late for class. They sent an (armed) security guard to get me. I still recall the shock on his face when I just told him

There’s this recurring trope that Europe is overregulated and the US is this sort of free-wheeling world where anything goes. As with everything, the reality is far more nuanced. I used to believe this trope myself… until I actually lived in Europe and experienced it. In

And they all built or bought great big unpopular hotels, completely at odds with Ireland's very successful small business tourism brand, which unsurprisingly didn't do well, and now they'd like the government to bale them out by filling them with immigrants at wild prices...

It seems that elites worldwide have decided that their response to the ending of the demographic transition that created modernity is to retreat into the early modern period (which is where mercantilism comes from). Folks, the early modern period was nasty, brutish, and short.

I'd love to know what Ireland's "structural advantages" are. For a century, economists have harped on about its structural disadvantages, and they were specific (small island in the Atlantic), whereas these aren't so much vague as unmentioned. A collection of empty allegations.
