“The big mistake we have made in the United States is to assume that if we want students to be able to think, then our curriculum should give our students lots of practice thinking. This is a mistake because what our students need is more to think with.” --@dylanwiliam

New working paper from @DTWillingham Gist: A knowledge-rich curriculum leads to better reading scores, but most importantly (for me) is that while the effect size was large for kids in high-income schools it was gigantic for kids in low-income schools! https://t.co/2HhUxHET2f

IMO, way too much focus has been placed on paragraph and whole-text levels and not enough focus on sentence and word levels, which requires knowledge of functional grammar.

Too many NSW students are leaving school without the ability to express themselves in writing, even though they are entering a world that increasingly requires it of them.

Too many edu-tech conversations are backwards. They begin with the tech. “Here's this new tech...how should it change what ppl do?” We should start with ppl. “What problems are teachers working on? What do students need?” Tech is *one* avenue to explore in seeking solutions.

As colleagues think about planning lessons please consider planning them for the child you have in front of you - they may need your professional love first before they can learn. My advice, if in doubt, as I once said to an experienced teacher “just give him the bloody pencil”.
