Y2K got a pretty great review in @nytimesbooks. Thanks @AlexandraJacobs; you helped me fulfill a dream I’ve had since I was a Y2K era kid reading the NYT with my dad, the environmentalist engineer 💿🤍👽🫧 https://t.co/6OHTBEMxXJ

When milennials graduated into unemployment, it was during a systemic crisis that battered everyone. It made milennials more left-wing and, in general, skeptical of capitalism, and that's been a durable effect. Gen Z is graduating into unemployment, too, but the crisis is limited

When I was a young man, and Barack Obama was president, you could log online every day and visit so many websites that published voicey and intelligent work of reasonable length, on a variety of interesting subjects, by dozens of early-to-mid-career writers. Today, not so much

Third, a 0.15% increase in short term mortality is probably much less than ongoing mortality from poor working conditions for nurses & PCAs. It matters, and it’s more of a reason for hospitals to negotiate in good faith and not let their nurses strike. Striking is a last resort.

What happens when nurses go on strike? Patients die.

Zohran Mamdani was asked in 2002 by New York Magazine, along with other NYC kids, about what they wanted for the Winter holidays, to which Zohran, age 11, answered with a request for books + FIFA 2003 & SimCity 3000 for PC

The Zohran campaign is a case study in how we must convey our ideas in a persuasive, appealing way that resonates with people’s commonsense experience of reality so our ideas then become the prevailing ideas of our time. Sounds obvious. Yet not always how people do left politics.

Antisemitism means treating Jews unequally. There's zero evidence that @ZohranKMamdani opposes giving Jews equal rights--either in the US or Israel-Palestine--and mountains of evidence that his critics oppose equality for Palestinians. When will they have to answer for that?

Nothing shaped me intellectually more than great arts criticism. Just all kinds of smart people explaining in daily and weekly papers what I needed to know about history and politics and love in their writing about music and film. It’s mostly gone, I fear.
