Do you want 1 minute/day of physics history for your students? If your answer is yes, you might like the year's worth of slides I just finished. https://t.co/6CQdILDuMM Comments are turned on if you want to leave suggestions/comments. #ITeachPhysics

Want to learn more about Modeling Instruction? Join @SecaurPhysics and me for a virtual intro course starting in Sept. We'd also love it if you could pass this along to colleagues. Details at https://t.co/sFDvVz3KQm. Can't wait to discuss pedagogy with other Science teachers!

Had to delete my original post of this because the resolution was too high. Anyway, here's the phone pocket organizer with labels again, it worked for me last year. See the QT for a spreadsheet to generate labels from rosters.
It's the ANZORG organizer with pockets from Amazon https://t.co/s7NryBI9py Honestly best $17 I spent in 2022. The spreadsheet I made for printing custom cards from class rosters is here. https://t.co/M0NYez5zxa 2/2

Phones actually have a ton of useful sensors in them that you can use for physics experiments. So we do sometimes use them. But the general expectation is that I am helping students be part of a healthy learning environment and it's worked for positive relationships so far.

The point is, it's a dopamine hit rectangle. If teachers are going to teach social skills and academics, we need students to understand how to do those without the constant temptation of doing something else. They can practice self-restraint in the hours they are not in my class.

This isn't even getting into things like academic honesty issues (we are supposed to use common assessments with colleagues in the same subject, so we don't want photos of tests and quizzes!) or inappropriate use of social media.

If a student has a recurring phone problem, and me or an admin calls their family, what do you think the parent says? "Can't you just take it from them during class?" Ask students and they will say things like "just take roll using phones." Everyone knows it's a problem. 🤷♀️

Students have a hard time interacting with each other when someone's can't leave their screen alone. They don't want to be partners/groupmates with someone who's on their phone. All the SEL stuff we do, the relationship building? Doesn't work without engagement.

I tell my students that I get it. I am from a different era where kids didn't have any phones (c/o 2002) but I am actually a competitive mobile gamer. My partner and I met playing mobile games. I love my phone. I leave it in my bag and zip it up all day or else I would be on it.

I'm saying this here in 2023. The purpose of a classroom phone system/expectation is so that you *don't* have to spend class time talking to kids who are addicted to their phones and turn it into a big deal or discipline issue.
@MsMagaryPhysics I taught for 12 years. This approach is sad. Kids need to learn how to be present. Not forced into it by controlling their private property. The kids needs to take control of themselves. I know I know, easier said than done.

I'm trying to quit this site because, aside from taking psychic damage every time I read a popular thread here, my mom & best friend work a block away from the HQ. It's the windiest part of San Francisco and I can't stand the thought of that stupid sign falling on their heads

These slides seem to be more popular with post-secondary physics people than I thought they would be so be warned, I made them for my classes, one of which has earth & space science integrated so you may find yourself with surprise geology nuggets 🪨

By year I mean school year, this year only, excluding weekends/holidays. I'll finish the rest next summer.

If students don’t need libraries, why aren’t affluent schools getting rid of them?

@sage_stage I would not be a teacher if I did not have a union.
