THREAD: On Tuesday evening it appeared the end was finally in sight. Hamas formally accepted the ceasefire proposal put forward by Egypt and Qatar, and spontaneous celebrations erupted in the streets Rafah and other Palestinian towns in the Gaza Strip.
THREAD: About a week ago the US and Israeli suddenly stopped comparing Hamas to ISIS. The term “Hamas-ISIS” had become de rigueur among Israeli officials in their public statements,
THREAD: On 29 February I participated in a debate organised by Lex Fridman on Israel and Palestine, alongside Norman Finkelstein, Benny Morris, and Steven Bonnell (stage name “Destiny”).
THREAD: Senior Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, are again publicly advocating the ethnic cleansing of the Gaza Strip. Their proposals are being presented as voluntary emigration schemes,
THREAD: The eruption of protests in solidarity with the Palestinian people at numerous Western universities, and throughout the United States in particular, represents a pivotal moment.
THREAD: To understand why International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan’s conduct regarding “The Situation in Palestine” is so scandalous and should disqualify him from office, a little background is necessary.
THREAD: The Israeli correspondent Barak Ravid had an interesting article in Axios on 29 December. The article in question, about a recent phone call between Biden and Netanyahu,
THREAD: Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip has resumed in full force. The intensity of its bombing and shelling is as intense as before the truce, perhaps even more so. Israel will however find it difficult to continue this campaign for another 50 days.
THREAD: Steven Bonnell (stage name “Destiny”) responded to my previous thread with a series of his own tweets. True to form it contained more juvenile name-calling (“cowardly fuck”, “disgusting human”, “sniveling worm”, etc.).
THREAD: The following translation of a witness statement from the Gaza Strip was produced by a volunteer with the Palestinian Journalist Syndicate. It is provided here because it is an account that according to the translator “we find to be highly credible”.
THREAD: As predicted, no sooner did Antony Blinken arrive in the region than hostilities erupted again. The first killings, numbering in the dozens, resulting from Israeli air raids and artillery barrages throughout the Gaza Strip have already been reported.
Israel has just re-opened the Beit Hanoun/Erez crossing for the first time since 7 October. As repeatedly noted, Israel is so utterly dependent on the US it literally takes just one phone call to reverse Israeli policy 180 degrees.
THREAD: Who was there first? The short answer is that the question is irrelevant. Claims of ancient title (“This land is ours because we were here several thousand years ago”) have no standing or validity under international law.
THREAD: On 7 October Israel vowed to destroy Hamas. To eradicate it as an organization. To neuter it as a military force, political movement, and governing entity. More recently Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, in true mob boss style,
THREAD: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued its ruling in response to South Africa’s invocation of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, accusing Israel of perpetrating the crime of genocide in the Gaza Strip.
According to journalists in the Gaza Strip, the US-sponsored and supplied Israeli military is using a tactic it often used in Lebanon. Bomb a building, wait for crowds to gather for rescue efforts, then bomb it again.
Thread: Since 1917 it has been a consistent principle of Western policy that Palestinians have no right to self-defence. There isn’t a single exception on record. Most recently, several Western governments characterised a number of settler pogroms in the West Bank as “terrorism”,
Only in America: Nancy Pelosi, former House leader and Democratic Party icon, calls upon FBI to investigate pro-Palestinian activists for links to Russia. FBI Director Christopher Wray, Trump appointee: "We are not going to be investigating nonviolent First Amendment activity".
I was approached today for comment by a reporter working on an article for Deutsche Welle. My response:
Thank you for your message and questions. I do recall our previous contact.
Under normal circumstances I would be happy to respond to your questions.
“57.5% of Israeli Jews said that they believed the IDF was using too little firepower in Gaza, 36.6% said the IDF was using an appropriate amount of firepower, while just 1.8% said they believed the IDF was using too much fire power”
THREAD: Since 7 October 2023 there has been a concerted campaign by Israel, its apologists and other flunkies to erase any distinction between Palestinian civilians and combatants.
When Israel made unfounded allegations against several UNRWA employees, its Western sponsors and allies immediately severed funding to the agency. When Israel murders seven Western citizens using Western weaponry, it's called upon to quickly investigate and exonerate itself...
Thread: What has happened to Israeli hasbara (“explaining”, i.e. propaganda)? Others may disagree but it used to be professional, sophisticated, intelligent, and effective.
German journalist insists Holocaust didn't happen because "Nuremberg prosecutors failed to produce memo by Hitler confirming he wanted to exterminate Jews"
In no other Western country would such words ever be uttered by a centre-right (or for that matter centre-left) head of government, or be lauded by his own constituents for doing so.
Incoming Irish Taoiseach (prime minister) Simon Harris addresses Benjamin Netanyahu directly with some remarkably strong words:
"Prime Minister Netanyahu, the Irish people could not be clearer. We are repulsed by your actions.”
Old enough to remember Western outrage at fabricated reports of babies being thrown out of Kuwaiti incubutors by Iraqi soldiers. Also old enough to remember Western indifference at verified accounts of babies left to die and decompose in Palestinian incubators by Israeli soldiers
THREAD: On Monday Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, stated that Hamas’s military force, the Martyr Izz-al-Din al-Qassam Brigades as well as the Jerusalem Battalions of Islamic Jihad (PIJ) were on the verge of collapse.
Given that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other US officials have repeatedly insisted that Hamas forms the sole obstacle to a ceasefire agreement, Palestinians could be forgiven for believing that day 213 of this genocidal ordeal would be the last.
THREAD: More on visa bans. It seems the new fad among Western governments is to denounce settler violence and adopt measures against individual settlers. Following the US, the European Union and United Kingdom are now also considering the nuclear option:
German government at ICJ today: We perpetrated history's most infamous genocide last century, and are therefore under a moral obligation to participate in one this century.
David Frum still trying to figure out how it can possible be the case that Israel has the firepower to conduct a genocidal attack against unarmed civilians but lacks the means to defeat an armed force. No wonder Iraq ended so badly for him...
Very strange to me that anti-Israel voices can believe *both* that Hamas is gloriously defeating Israel in Gaza and that Israel is ruthlessly conducting genocide against a defenseless civilian population in Gaza.
"A mistake is when you take a wrong turn at a traffic light or when a surgeon removes the wrong kidney. But when over half a year you kill tens of thousands of people, that’s not a mistake. That’s a deliberate policy."
THREAD: Many have pointed out that US President Joe Biden’s embrace of Israel is unprecedented, even when compared to his immediate predecessor, Donald Trump.
The euphoria however proved short-lived. Several hours later the office of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu announced that Israel’s war cabinet had unanimously agreed that the proposal “is far from Israel’s necessary requirements”,
Or that among other displays of familiarity with the region he couldn’t identify Bashar Assad, thought Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is the president of Israel, and was apparently unable to locate his favorite MENA state on a map.
THREAD: Did Israel create Hamas, and did Netanyahu empower it to rule the Gaza Strip? Since the 7 October attacks in Israel, many critics of Israeli policy, and of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in particular,
THREAD: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued a press release stating that it will this Friday “deliver its Order” in response to South Africa’s “Request for the indication of provisional measures”
Rather, the incident confirms yet again that Israeli soldiers are authorized to shoot dead both surrendering combatants and civilians waving flags of surrender. Under current conditions in the Gaza Strip,
Bonnell’s obsession with Finkelstein, and his fixation with convincing viewers he acquitted himself with distinction in his exchanges with Finkelstein before these were publicly available, speaks for itself.
What is described here is not "use of human shields", but rather a much more severe crime: forced conscription of a civilian to act as a suicide bomber on behalf of the IDF. That being said, there is ample evidence that the IDF is also using human shields in recent weeks,
THREAD: On 28 March the International Court of Justice issued a new ruling (“Order”) in the case known as Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in The Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel).
"USAID administrator Samantha Power arrived in Egypt alongside a delivery of 36,000 pounds of humanitarian aid for Gaza." That weighs less than 20 of the bombs US has supplied to Israel's genocidal regime, without a peep of protest from this opportunist "scholar of genocide"
The United States is often identified as a mediator as well, but this is not quite accurate. Not only is it Israel’s chief sponsor in every sense of the word, but it also openly demands the destruction and elimination of Hamas, with whom it has neither contact nor communication.
and along with their partners-in-crime in Washington they often insisted Hamas is worse – much worse even – than ISIS. It’s a familiar playbook. In 2001 the Twin Towers had barely collapsed and Ariel Sharon immediately began insisting the PLO was no different than Al-Qaeda
The US has denounced the campaign to establish Jewish settlements in the occupied Gaza Strip. Hard to take seriously when it allows Americans to make tax-free donations to such initiatives, which it officially designates as "charitable".
History – with a capital H – was made today. As of 26 January 2024, Israel and its Western sponsors can no longer mobilize the Holocaust to shield themselves from accountability for their crimes against the Palestinian people.

Full disclosure: I was at the time unaware that Bonnell had in previous podcasts identified himself as “pro-genocide” with respect to Israel’s mass killings of Palestinians.
THREAD: On 5 December, the United States announced “a new visa restrictions policy targeting individuals and their family members involved in or meaningfully contributing to actions that undermine peace, security, and stability in the West Bank.”
Indeed, Israel’s Western-supplied and supported military launched intensive air and artillery strikes to support an incursion into Rafah that commenced shortly after Netanyahu’s announcement.
The broader significance is that US forces are now dying in defense of Israel. Throughout this war Washington has had a clear choice: put an end to Israel’s genocidal onslaught on the Gaza Strip, or engage in conflict with regional forces determined to do so themselves.
Of course, no civilian deserves to be held captive unless convicted of a specific crime by legitimate authority, yet the contrast between the testimonies of released Israeli and Palestinian civilian captives is enormous.
It remains unclear why the legal definition of apartheid leaves Bonnell clueless about the status of Jim Crow but sufficiently confident to indict Arab states.
It's been a busy day for the Axis of Genocide: massacre and demolition at Al-Shifa Hospital, bombing of Iranian embassy, and killing of 7 aid workers in one strike. Was the celebratory champagne uncorked by Biden or Blinken?
and given that this campaign by the German state has included the summary and illegal dismissal of Arab journalists by Deutsche Welle in blatant violation of freedom of the press, I am unable to cooperate with Deutsche Welle in good conscience.
Alarm bells should have started ringing in early November when US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other Western politicians began insisting there could be “no forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza”.
@asadabukhalil
Instead, the US is functioning as Israel’s proxy, now fighting on multiple fronts, its soldiers dying to defend Israel and protect its ability to continue fighting in the Gaza Strip. This is because for more than 100 days, Israel’s longest war since 1948-1949,
As does his repeatedly expressed view that nothing of substance was uttered during the debate and watching it a waste of time. (Bonnell also lamented that he missed a "gang bang" to participate in the debate.)
International Court of Justice has just issued additional provisional measures because “Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine” because “famine is setting in”, with at least 31 people “including 27 children, having already died”.
THREAD: According to a 2 January NYT article, US intelligence sources are claiming that both Hamas and Islamic Jihad were using Al-Shifa Hospital as a “command center”, and also held captives there, until shortly before it was invaded by the Israeli military last November.
“The depth of the horror surpasses our ability to describe it,” said James Elder, a spokesperson with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) ... “I’ve not seen that level of devastation in 20 years with the UN."
However, given the appalling suppression of freedoms by the German state, in explicit support of Israeli war crimes, crimes against humanity, and as it now appears also genocide,
Given numerous reports over the years, including in recent weeks, of Palestinian civilians bearing white flags being shot and killed, this is a demonstrably false statement.
THREAD: Regarding International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan, there is an interesting personal dimension to his story. Karim Khan, although a British citizen, is the grandson of the distinguished Pakistani diplomat and jurist Muhammad Zafarullah Khan (1893-1985).

ICJ judges are not diplomats who follow instructions from their governments. It was nevertheless particularly satisfying to see the Court’s ruling delivered by the presiding American judge, Joan E. Donoghue, who additionally voted in favor of each of the provisional measures.
“We don’t want the Palestinians to put is in a position where we have to choose between our commitment to international law and our commitment to Israel”. In other words, they didn’t want to expose the rotten core of their rules-based international order,
The foreign citizens killed in Israel's targeting of WCK convoy may not have died in vain. Many who maintained strict radio silence for half a genocidal year now coming out of the woodworks. Could Amal Clooney soon emerge from hibernation? Karim Khan interrupt his Xmas holiday?
Perhaps if Biden stopped systematically violating both international law and US legislation his lectures to university students about "the rule of law" wouldn't be so completely laughable
@asadabukhalil
it has proven incapable of defeating Hamas, a second-order guerilla movement that doesn’t possess a single aircraft, tank, warship, or anti-aircraft defense system. Its long-range missiles basically need to make a direct impact on an individual’s forehead to achieve a kill.
The Jordanian authorities continue to insist that the attack was in fact directed at the US base in Tanf in southeastern Syria rather than Tower 22, because it does not want to draw unnecessary attention to the highly unpopular US military presence on Jordanian territory.
So, what happened? Most obviously, the US and Israel have been negotiating, concluding, and implementing a series of agreements with “Hamas-ISIS”. It’s not a particularly good look to be in intensive discussions with, and make one concession after the other to,
Although it participates in the negotiations, as Blinken’s statements attest Washington serves primarily as a proxy for Israel rather than as what any reasonable observer would characterise as a mediator.
Until the German state demonstrates that it has learned the lessons of its sordid and according to many accounts uniquely criminal history, I am unavailable for comment. END
Ceasefire negotiations have been going on for some time, led by Egypt and Qatar, both of whom maintain working relationships with both Israel and Hamas. Egypt additionally has a close alliance with Israel, while Qatar hosts the Hamas leadership on its territory.
I've been watching the proceedings of today's UN Security Council meeting on the Middle East. Listening to the US and UK representatives explain away and invert the substance of the recent ICJ ruling requires a new term: genocidesplaining
It hasn’t quite worked out that way, and the main reason is that Biden and Blinken’s unmatched embrace of Israel and Israeli impunity in its dealings with the Palestinian people has extended to permitting Netanyahu to ride roughshod over US policy preferences without consequence.
Speaker Johnson, addressing today's Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony at the US Capitol, compares US college campuses to Nazi Germany. He says if you close your eyes, "you can hear screams coming from the gas chambers." He says this is why Congress just passed $24 Billion for Israel
What goes around comes around: The son of Gadi Eizenkot, a lead author of the "Dahiya Doctrine", has been killed implementing his father's genocidal doctrine in the Gaza Strip

What is certain is that he is entirely unaware that Jim Crow served as a model and inspiration for the South African white-minority regime’s racist policies, which bequeathed us the term and crime of apartheid.
THREAD: The verdict is in. The US, as could have been predicted even before the recent Israeli-Palestinian truce came into force, has blamed Hamas for its collapse. (More accurately, the truce expired because no agreement was reached by the parties on its extension or renewal).
Released Palestinian women and children speak of constant physical and verbal abuse, particularly since 7 October; all manner of deprivation; and an escalation of abuse once it became apparent they would be released.
