Hello new followers, thanks for being here 👋🏾
I'm a filmmaker turned publisher (very weird 🥴). I became interested in journalism when Black death started "going viral" on the internet. I want to help build trust between the media and Black communities. Follow

Good morning! We’re retiring the “Chicago is the most violent city” narrative. Spread the word! We’re not even in the top 15, as reported by Forbes. Violence is an American reality. Stop making Chicago the face of it. Cc: the business community.
I see y'all are trying to tell organizers how to protest in a more convenient way again. War crimes are inconvenient. Genocide is inconvenient. Some of y'all reject disruption more than genocide.
Media - if you report on Chicago looting please include all of what happened yesterday
a healing circle lead by Chicago organizers for a child victim of community violence; a 15(?) year old shot by police; looting of downtown corporations
All interrelated, if you have the range
One of the worst critiques of
#RENAISSANCE
is, “I miss the old Beyoncé when she didn’t sing-rap.”
Like…you mean this one? My girl is literally a sing-rap pioneer!
The point is, of all the things to comment on, it is bazaar for this elite, highly visible Black woman to question Jada's condition and whether Jada is disabled enough to warrant protection.
*muting* this now
Court reporting really is a specialty. It’s not something any journalist can just get up and do accurately & effectively. Cuniff was able to give context to a high profile case b/c she knows that particular court system & the main players who are a part of it.

JUST IN: CPD is investigating allegations that a group of officers had improper sexual relations with newly arrived immigrants, including at least one facing accusations of having sexual contact with a minor and impregnating her.
The attorney representing Dexter Reed’s family said at a press conference today that these were plain clothed officers in an unmarked car who did not identify themselves as police.
If you take anything away from today's release, let it be this: "I feared for my life" is somehow always valid rationale when police shoot first. It's never an explanation afforded to the rest of us—especially a Black man surrounded by screaming cops with their weapons drawn.
EXCLUSIVE: A WIRED analysis of data leaked from the surveillance company formerly known as Shotspotter reveals the secret locations of 25,580 gunshot detection microphones.
Check our interactive map to see if there's a sensor mounted near you.
Chicago is having a rally today. I’m expecting there to be a huge turnout as Chicago has one of the largest populations of Palestinians in the US. We also have a lot of multiethnic coalitions.
Lightfoot mentioning Rekia Boyd is triggering and will definitely enrage any family member and organizer who fought for Dante Servin to be fired while Lightfoot was president of the police board. She allowed him to escape accountability and we will not forget.
The National Guard searching bags at the entrance to the Grand Central subway station. Earlier today Kathy Hochul announced she would send 750 National Guard members to subway stations throughout NYC.
Community members have the right to ask whether this is the best use of our resources...because why did a group of people have to deescalate the actions of an officer? Why have a free, public event rooted in blackness and dance and then try to police people's movements?
Breakfast with ‘Friends’: Gianno Caldwell talks new Chicago mayor with diners
Gianno Caldwell asks diners their reaction to Brandon Johnson being sworn in as Chicago Mayor. Segment:
“What happened this morning is a terrifying escalation by the state, and a chillingly direct attack on the First Amendment. This is fascist political repression,”
6 former Mississippi officers, some who called themselves ‘The Goon Squad,' pleaded guilty to state charges for torturing and sexually assaulting two Black men
It’s a lot of people that have something to say who wont travel south of 59th. It’s Black youth that have suffered disproportionately from racist policies and divestment. If we are serious about addressing crime it has to be about more than making these young people disappear.
Newsrooms need to eliminate "officer-involved shooting" from their style guides and standards.
It is passive and doesn't accurately describe what took place.
National/international media is currently parachuting into Chicago. Y'all have every right to ask journalists what organization they are with. You can absolutely research their previous coverage of Chicago. You don't have to speak to them--send em to me 👀
A total of 42 activists are currently facing state domestic terror charges for protesting the building of cop city, distributing flyers, and other frivolous charges:
I know y'all don't think this is the "right" way to respond to oppression but when billions of TIF dollars have been hoarded downtown/up north to support corporations...and then the people loot the corporations, we need to have a deeper conversation or this won't end.
@BreeNewsome
This particular piece highlights their extremism though. I think it’s an eye-opening read for those who don’t understand that the settlers are fascist.
@theeashleyray
Tell me why I thought she was bout to give us some deep thoughts on the westernization of the world and how they categorize black and indigenous lands.
I've been told that many DNC insiders, as well as those within the Biden campaign and administration are convinced that by the time elections roll around Arab, Muslim voters will "cool down" and "forget" about all that is happening in Gaza.
They are mistaken.
I have never in my life seen a government kill journalists like this, while the journalism community responds with silence and cowardice. Rest in Peace to this brave soul.
A lack of media coverage from Gaza ..
due to the killing more than 12 journalists, the bombing, and the blackout of electricity and the Internet.
However, we are still trying to withstand and continue coverage so the world can see the israili crimes in Gaza.
Losing DJ Casper and Dj Deeon back to back has me in my feelings. We need to do more to document and celebrate Chicago cultural legends while they are here.
1/ Paul Vallas created a $73 MILLION deficit as CEO of Philadelphia’s public schools & will never see accountability for it—just one example of how the powerful/wealthy decides what is criminal, while ppl who owe tickets/fees can get their property impounded, & licensed removed
These are the topics that I raise to Black capitalists because even when Black people have property, this country has a record of stealing and destroying it.
An all-Black town called Willard, Virginia was destroyed to build Dulles Airport.
And there’s more. The town was named after the Willard family, which I wrote about in the reparations chapter of my new book, Why Does Everything Have to Be About Race?
TOGETHER NOW FUND: Mayor Lightfoot launches the Together Now Fund, a $10M initiative that includes $1M from Jewel-Osco. The fund will support the City’s neighborhood-based recovery efforts.
Now, is there a need for more Black journalists to do this type of reporting? YES. But asking a lifestyle/culture mag why they are not doing court reporting does not make sense. It’s like asking sports commentators to cover public policy.
85 DAYS AND 75 YEARS OF GENOCIDE. CHICAGO CONTINUES TO SHOW UP IN SOLIDARITY WITH OUR PEOPLE ON PALESTINE. IDA B WELLS AND MICHIGAN. NO PEACE UNTIL LIBERATION 🇵🇸 🇵🇸
“CDPH has no rapid tests available” was one of the most alarming statements I heard last night and we are not talking about it enough. We are in an omicron surge and CDPH can’t support with testing. Did I hear that right?
Ice Cube could have just told Black ppl to fill out the Census, which actually routes billions of federal dollars to our communities. The deadline is TONIGHT everyone. $1500 per person, per year is on the line:
Fill it out here:
ATTN Chicago artists: Applications are now open through Jan.16 for the 2024 Individual Artists Program (IAP), a grant offering up to $6,000 to support artists across all artistic disciplines, including film, literary arts, music, performing arts, visual arts, design and more.
Feeling inspired! Thanks so much for your words of affirmation. Gonna get some rest so we can continue reshaping the narrative. Support by joining

Whenever I find out about some parachute journalism happening regarding Chicago’s violence, I’ve been quietly making it my business to let them know that they are not welcome. In
@TheTRiiBE
’s newsletter I decided to share what I recently told The Economist
This framing erases the organizing community’s tireless efforts that got us here. Bring Chicago Home predates Mayor Johnson. Framing everything as W or a L for Mayor J when it’s actually Chicago’s houseless community that suffers really takes the humanity out of the situation.
Mayor Brandon Johnson’s "Bring Chicago Home" referendum has essentially been booted from the March 19 ballot after a Cook County judge on Friday sided with business and real estate interests who oppose the measure.
More important context is that Chicago police have trained with Israeli law enforcement. So, there are deep ties between Palestinians and Black people through the shared trauma of increased police presence, surveillance and brutality.
These people are giving “what about Chicago” talking points when speaking on that racist hate crime in Jacksonville. It’s really nothing more than a racist talking point. We get no empathy or solutions while gun violence pervades this country. It’s everywhere.
Candidates not wanting to speak on Paul Vallas’s son is one thing but the media absolutely should not cower. Vallas is personally invested in policies around policing that pose a danger to Black lives. He kept this from the public. Press him.
CWB Chicago posted a video of someone being sexually assaulted on this app. The act and the posting of the act is beyond disturbing.
If you see it, please report the post and do not engage with it. The lack of ethics from media outlets is straight up abhorrent.
A global population has been reading, watching documentaries, connecting with each other and sharing knowledge on social media and our politicians are like—“no, you are too dumb to understand STOP trying to learn!”
The reporting officer, Thomas P Carey badge

, has over 100 allegations of misconduct and this is why journalists need to do more than just parrot police reports.
Female migrants are so desperate for money that they are selling sex or being forced to sell sex right outside of the local police district. See for yourself. My other fear? The same will happen to the children. This is not hyperbole. This is a reality for thousands in U.S.
A city of migrants being xenophobic towards new migrants is an unfortunate Chicago tradition that

The guy sitting next to Big Dale is Andre Smith who, in addition to being a candidate for 20th Ward alderperson in the 2023 election, was also a paid Vallas campaign worker.
Probably something

should have disclosed…
We

chose not to cover Lolla. If y’all wanna hear our reasons, we can maybe cook something up the newsletter. Pretty simply, safety > profit. I mean 100k per day capacity????
I’d much rather read a piece on why a publication made the responsible choice to not cover Lollapalooza. Unfortunately, y’all have investors and ads to pay for.

Also blk publications can’t just SEND ppl to all parts of the country b/c a story is trending. It costs money!
Plus local journalism is a good thing. Fly-in journalism would not have produced all the nuanced coverage that the local reporters provided.
Tonight, Chicago journalists gathered and grieved the loss of our colleagues through war crimes in Gaza and surrounding areas. It was a touching and needed tribute to freedom of speech and the press.
Stop the censorship. Stop killing journalists.
In case you were wondering, you absolutely CAN be on the cover of Chicago Magazine and get denied housing in the same month.
I’m sad y’all. Please send leads for spaces west of the expressway for April 1st move-in.
I didn’t catch the whole presser but this quote is damning. What I would expect from a progressive mayor is a conversation on building systems of care for all Chicagoans and new arrivals.
Mayor Brandon Johnson’s reax to claims shelter where migrant boy died is unsafe: “They’re just dropping off ppl anywhere. Do you understand how raggedy and how evil that is … then you want to hold us accountable for something that’s happening down at the border? It’s sickening.”

Micheal Che making light of Simone Biles being sexually assaulted is a dumb way to end his career. But since he’s an insensitive dumb ass,
let’s get him tf out of here.

In a city plagued by violence of the worst sort, did
