Took my daughters on a Brontë pilgrimage to Haworth (incredible place) and now we can watch this too - what a treat 😍
Sally Wainwright’s superb, bleak, utterly believable portrait of the Brontë siblings is back on the BBC iplayer. Every choice in it seems to me right and brave - even the occasional use of anachronistic vocabulary. And the casting is matchless.

Venture Capital Trust relief reduced to 20% - this is a significant reduction (hidden in the #Budget detail) which will be a damaging blow for private investment.

Literally, so many questions…
The mansion tax - this is what the OBR says: "From April 2028, owners of properties identified as being valued at over £2 million by the Valuation Office (in 2026 prices) will be liable for a recurring annual charge which will be additional to existing council tax liability.

The personal allowance will be frozen at £12,570 until 2031. Had it increased with inflation, it should today be worth nearly £16k; and it should be worth closer to £18k. This is a significant tax increase on 'working people' on lower incomes. #Budget2025

The problem with a mansion tax is that it does not recognise the difference between real liquidity and paper wealth. A valuation is not proof of financial comfort if ‘money’ is locked in the walls. #Budget Interested to hear more views…

Our house in London is probably worth under the £2m threshold. But on a good day with an enthusiastic buyer, it might hit that? We put everything into getting it. No regrets. But interesting to see how ‘value’ is assessed. #Budget

Looking at OBR figures, this is looking like a painful budget for savers. Higher tax rates on dividends and savings, plus capping of salary sacrifice for pensions (that's also more tax for employers). Note that salary sacrifice cap mostly hits private sector pension savers...

I was once in a position to be responsible for releasing market-sensitive information. It was minor stuff compared to a Budget but the planning was still meticulous and I actually stood next to the button pusher to reassure them that they could press send. How on earth could this
A link to our Economic and fiscal outlook document went live on our website too early this morning. It has been removed. We apologise for this technical error and have initiated an investigation into how this happened. We will be reporting to our Oversight Board, the Treasury,

Oh, a tax cut. Not in the OBR report but just heard it - a temporary holiday from SDRT/stamp duty on shares for companies listing on London. Good to see focus on this. But I'm sceptical it will be effective. Investors and companies look further out than a few years.

ISAs full £20k retained but £8k of that reserved exclusively for investments. Over 65s retain full £20k cash allowance #Budget #Budget2025 #Budget2026
Then a slight surprise: an increase in income tax on investment income – property, savings and dividends. The political attraction is obvious – the problem is that UK dividend tax is already one of highest in the world. Look at the top of the arrow tails on this chart:

The "fiscal creep" we've seen in the last six years has probably been the greatest tax increase from a single policy in history. Now we get more.
