regarding the Buffalo no touchdown, nothing more irritating to an official than to make a great call and then someone in a suit in an office in New York incorrectly reverses it. It is more and more obvious that there isn't a standard for staying with the call on the field.
Look, here is the rule. If you’re going to the ground you have to hold onto the ball when the ball hits the ground…Going to the ground trumps lunging/reaching to try and get extra yards or score a TD. You do that at your own risk. It’s incomplete…just ask Dez
Enough people have asked about the blindside block that I feel I need to give my opinion. I think the call is incorrect. He doesn't lead with his shoulder or head. He pushes him. It is a bad rule and I will give my suggested rule change on Last Call Monday at 11am PST.
Am I the only one that didn’t feel the Clemson fumble should have been overturned? Did the tip of the ball actually touch the ground out of bounds? Was it indisputable? I don’t think so.
Holy Shit. I am sitting outside of our broadcast booth and a guy walked by with his son and said to him, “that’s Gene Steratore sitting there.” I guess I should be flattered. Sorry Gene.
People are saying a runner breaking the plane causes the ball to become dead…which is true. BUT the receiver does not become a runner until he completes the process of the catch. TOTALLY DIFFERENT
Unless I am crazy, they really mishandled the replay. They should have reset the clock to 41 seconds and then run 10 seconds down to 31. That took 15 seconds away from the Saints.
In Pittsburgh, offside on the offensive guard? Officials are told to call that if a lineman has his head in the neutral zone on the short yardage push plays, not on field goal attempts.
My father-in-Law, Roy Snyder. This is us today as he celebrates his 100th birthday. WWll Vet. Shot down and was captured in Austria. Spent 16 months in Stalag 17. Still living at home, still shaking dice for quarters every day, occasionally with a rum and coke.
Sunday in Fremont, CA, with my father-in-law who is a 98 year old WWII Vet. Shot down in 1943, 16 months in Stalag 17, and today sitting in his backyard wearing his GS Warriors t-shirt and sweat pants. He can’t wait for tip-off. The man is incredible. I’m honored to be with him.
Some people questioning the one second left on the clock at the end of the half and suggesting home cooking. All clock operators in the playoffs are brought in from other cities. They do not travel in the regular season but do in the playoffs. No home cooking.
Now that another touchdown has been taken away with out clear and obvious evidence, it is time to move on to the catch rule. It doesn't work. I doesn't make sense. Start with the Jessie James play. That should be a catch and a touchdown not an incomplete pass. (more)
Lots of talk about the Wagner block. The wording in the rule book is NEW this year and is clear. The new wording states, "May not place a hand or hands on a teammate or opponent in an attempt to jump through a gap to block an opponent's kick or apparent kick." Case closed. Foul.
Not in the studio but on the scoreboard here in Jerry's world, don't see how the Buffalo TD was overturned. Not clear and obvious the toe didn't drag. There is a line behind the toe when he drags it. Am I missing something?
Reason for my silence was due to the fact that I left the production room and my computer for the bar and a couple of Titos. Wish I wouldn't have because it is clear the refs cost the Titans the game and they are the better team at least in the minds of those that are tweeting me
I get the rule which needs to be changed. Wasn't it the Patriots who first exploited this rule a couple of weeks ago? Then John Harbaugh did it. Why is Bill B upset when he was the first to do it if I recollect properly?
I agree with the stands. It was close but the initial ruling dictated. Good for Riveron/Yurk to stay with the standard that it not obvious that the call was wrong. Slight movement of the ball and slight bobble but slight is not enough to overturn.
Congrats Ed Hochuli on a wonderful career. No one ever worked harder than you. There is a reason why I put guys on your crew who were struggling or were first year officials. You never failed to make them better. Enjoy a new found freedom away from guys like me. You deserve it.
Lots of chatter on Twitter about the hit on Newton. I get it. It was a bit hit and looked like a foul but, it wasn’t. Newton was inbounds and Simmons did not lead with his helmet. It was more shoulder to shoulder with maybe incidental contact with the helmet. Not a foul.
Instant replay was correct in staying with incomplete pass. In order to go from incomplete to catch and fumble is if there is a clear recovery by either team or if the ball goes out of bounds. Case book plays 15.114 and 15.115.
My 99 yr old father-in-law at Christmas. He was a tail gunner in WWll. Shot down and spent 16 months in Stalag 17. He will be 100 in Oct. He still shakes dice every day but has to do it at home now. Up to the beginning of March he was doing it at the bar. Tom Brokaw was right.
I can honestly say that I have not seen an inactive player get penalized. It's not a good day for him. Not only did he cost the Bengals 15 yards but he will get fined also.
That catch in Wisconsin should not have been overturned. He had control and the right hand never came off the ball when it hit the ground. It was a catch!
This picture was taken today. My father-in-law, Roy Snyder. He will be 100 years old in October. WWII Vet who spent 16 months in Stalag 17. The Greatest Generation.
The hit on Luck would have been a foul in the first three weeks of the season. The defender did try to break his fall at the end. I am happy that is not being called. The conference call with the competition committee has made a difference.
Living proof that you age quicker from age 45 to 68 (me) than you do from age 26 to 49 (Kirk). I should have borrowed some weed from Ricky to see if it could have kept me looking younger.🤓

Wow! We may have seen the best team in the NFL and maybe the best officiating crew. They had a great game. Nine total fouls, no replay reviews, no expedited reviews, no video assistance. Great job by Cheffers and his guys. We can only hope for more like this.
I think its time to follow the lead of college and targeting. Eject players for hits to the head area. Make it automatic but reviewable. Force teams to play a man down with carry overs to the next game if in the second half. College is doing more to send the message than the NFL.
A couple years ago, I wrote the players need to police themselves; there’s only so much rules-makers can do. I was ridiculed. Maybe rightfully. But I still believe that.
Second was I want to get back to work again. Well, I am walking a couple of miles a day and doing a lot of PT. And…I’m going back to work tomorrow doing two UFL games on Fox starting at 1pm Eastern. I’ve made it and will be back this fall doing college and NFL games.
People are talking about possible pass interference on the Eagles pick at the end of the game on Thursday night. The contact was not more than a yard downfield. Not a foul even if reviewed. I would not have stopped it either.
@getnickwright
Not true Nick. Clear recovery applies to catch/no catch, fumble/down by contact, and forward/backward pass. Please don’t mislead. The rules are hard enough to understand and misinformation makes it worse.
Well, not what I expected from this game. I thought it would be close. This officiating crew did a very good job. Stayed out of the way. 6 fouls and one quick review. 5 young guys got some great experience. Well done. I enjoyed the season. Thanks to those that follow me.
It’s seems a bit early but it’s time to follow
@USFL
. We are going to do things on the site that have never been done before. We will highlight the rules and officials. We even might use your input to make replay decisions. Follow me on

It does not matter that Mariota was in shotgun. The pass was touched by the defender which makes everyone eligible. He could have started under center.
The ineligible player downfield against Pittsburgh was not a good call. The player called for the foul was at the line of scrimmage when the pass was released. Can't make that call.
At the dome in New Orleans and watching some of the game from Jacksonville. Yesterday is a memory. I feel bad for Jeff Triplette. He is a great man who was part of a crew that did not have a good game. I feel bad that he is retiring under this cloud.
Wasn’t LaBron(GOAT in my opinion) sliding to his left when the contact occurred? I only did three years of officiating basketball, but to me that was a block. Tough position to put the replay center in, but in my opinion they made the right call.
Just boarded my flight to Minneapolis. Predicted to be a balmy -4 degrees when I land with a 10 mph wind. And I complain about 50 degree weather in Sacramento??Hope the hotel has good food cuz I won't be venturing out. Love indoor stadiums!
The League and the Committee cannot be close minded on this. It is not working now. We have to adjust this to make the game better. I am off my soapbox for today.
Wow! What a game. It was a thrill being in the booth. Hell of a game by Gene Steratore and his group. Gene and others made some big calls. Always a couple of misses but very good overall work. Great playoff football. Talk to you from Philly. Going to be a great game.
Again, I really like Jim and Tony. I think they do a really good job. But, last night I felt the officials were overly criticized. One thing for sure, they did not affect the outcome of the game. I have said my peace.
This morning we lost a great man. My 101 year old father-in-law, Roy Snyder, who was shot down in WWII and spent 16 months in Stalag 17, left us at 4am.
RIP my friend, my hero. You will be missed by many.
Many thought the new helmet rule was going to be the controversial topic of the season. Forget it. Roughing the passer by landing on top of him with most or all your body weight has stolen the show. We will talk about it on Last Call tomorrow.
Great ending to the weekend. Good job by this crew led by Tony Corrente. Big plus to whoever caught the ten second runoff. Today showed officiating the way it should be. Always a miss or two but solid performance by this group and Hussy's.
Two of my all-time favorites are now both gone, my dad and Red Cashion. Red was a mentor to us all, both as an official and a man. I will miss them both forever.
Mike Pereira is concerned with declining number of officials | The Sacramento Bee. It is really time to address the abuse that officials have to deal with on the youth level. Please read this article. The problem is not just in Sacramento, it’s everywhere.
It is a catch, but Fido’s recovery is not in the immediate continuing action after the ball came lose. Therefore, little Johnny keeps the ball at the spot of the fumble.
That being said, I would like to see a rule change that would elimate the try extension if it occurs in the playoffs. Revert to the college rule which does not extend for the try if the team that scores a TD is more than 2 points ahead. Last night was a mess. Make sense?
Interesting rule change in college football. On a kickoff, the receiver can signal for and make a fair catch inside the 25 and get the ball at the 25 regardless of where he caught it. The kickoff return continues to fade away. Will the NFL follow?
From what I could see from here in Philly, looked like the crew led by Clete Blakeman did a good job. Believe me, there is no such thing as a perfect game, but their errors were minimal. 7 total fouls in the game. I hope our game here goes as well. It is loud already.
USFL Football now on NBC. The game is between Houston and New Orleans. I promise to be better today than I was last night. I know you all will hold me accountable as you should.
