As predicted, Kim Leadbeater is using highly misleading terms here. 1. She says the assisted suicide panel would have “an inquisitorial role”. In fact she has given the panel —No power to compel witnesses to testify —No power to hear evidence on oath —No obligation to ask
"A panel can dive into a case in a lot more detail." The scrapping of a high court judge in assisted dying cases in favour of a 'death Tsar' panel is "an absolute strengthening of the bill", says Labour MP Kim Leadbeater. #TimesRadio | @ayeshahazarika

Instead of High Court, a quango. PM appointed Commissioner - judge or ex-judge - main job (a) choose panels (b) pass on applications. Much of job can be delegated to staff. Up to 10 year paid gig. Only gets involved again if panel says no. Not safeguard for vulnerable, but
Plans for Assisted Dying Review Panels have be released. It's a massive change to the Bill, and I can't believe it can be made and accepted without hearing new evidence and starting scrutiny again. It turns out "Judge-plus" is no such thing.

So let’s pay real wages & value our locally trained doctors. And ensure they have training places & consultant or GP post to go to. The current poor pay & shortage of training posts cannot continue if we are to stop the medical brain drain.

Dunning-Kruger Effect as Ms Leadbeater speaks ‘ex cathedra’ to doctors about the Mental Capacity Act. Just a reminder that she tried to stop @rcpsych giving evidence & refused to hear @gerisoc & disability groups. Unlike her, they might have some relevant experience of the MCA?
The Mental Capacity Act is the right place to start in terms of determining if a patient can make this decision. It's been tried and tested. It's used every day. Doctors are confident using it and it strikes the right balance - protecting both them and their patients. 4/7

The Leadbeater scrutiny committee is clearly a partisan & dangerous mess. An alternative rapid turn-around committee, akin to Independent SAGE needs to be set up to hear balanced evidence in public. @HackneyAbbott
@EdwardLeighGB
This week the assisted dying Bill committee heard from SIX pro-assisted dying Australians about how well it’s all going there. The former Attorney General of Victoria disagrees. If the aim is safety, surely he must be invited to give evidence? https://t.co/lkl8vzDIDu

@kimleadbeater told Parliament during her Bill’s First Reading that this could not happen. One of her Bill’s sponsors calls for assisted suicide on demand. Equality law ensures that assisted suicide will occur on demand if her Bill is passed.

Tory MP Ben Spencer says the Bill has ‘ideological and moral inconsistencies’ and proposes an ‘Assisted Dying Agency’

Leadbeater’s pockled committee has lost all credibility. 8 international pro-assisted suicide experts invited - none against. 6 invited legal proponents, 3 against. Attempts to meet ‘in camera’ with unlimited budgets. This badly written bill cannot be honestly defended. 1/2
“We absolutely will not invite the Royal College of Psychiatrists. All 14 of us are voting against it” [18 hours of negative publicity later] “Sorry, we actually love the Royal College and definitely want to invite them!” Is this scrutiny, or stage management?

It is time to dismiss the committee & pull the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. 2/2

It is time for honesty & public debate. Ms Leadbeater’s dishonest, intellectually bankrupt & partisan non-scrutiny committee dishonours Parliament & insults voters. Honest MPs can no longer support this corrupt process. It is time to pull support from the bill.
Thanks Naz. I will always work collaboratively & listen to colleagues. The Bill Committee will hear from nearly 50 witnesses with a range of views & a huge amount of expertise. (Important to remember this will never be enough for people who are fundamentally opposed to the Bill)

“A skilled doctor would gently open the door to those conversations”. How coercion starts. The “safe space” is suicide. “The doctor suggested it.” “She knows best.” “She’s very busy.” “Maybe I should then.” Doctors should not broach assisted dying.

And we have plans to put in place assisted suicide if the @kimleadbeater bill is passed. This has nothing to do with rationing care & no one will ever feel societal pressure to opt for suicide to help the NHS or because of lack of care. That could never happen. Not here. No.
We have plans in place to manage extra demand – we use critical incidents to manage and monitor pressures, we have more beds than we did last year and we have new ways of working which ensure people can get cared for at home.

Collective amnesia at @RCPhysicians! It took two years of work by grassroots Fellows who have been pilloried by officers, an embarrassing EGM, several forced “resignations” to get this minimal scope of practice which is issued too late to prevent legislation. Forget the praise!
Today, I give praise to @RCPhysicians senior leadership & key contributors. Over the last 12 months RCP hit rock bottom. A catastrophic EGM, leaders departing, the future looked bleak. Led by @Mumtaz_Patel_1, RCP underwent an independent King’s fund review. Published it

If you want to know why doctors are so angry about their assistants, it’s an enormous patient safety scandal developing in full view. @doctor_oxford doesn’t pull any punches. https://t.co/060rNI80l4

Our regulator is not fit for purpose. I want a refund from @gmcuk
In 2023, @gmcuk awarded a four-year £2.8 million contract for private medical insurance (£700k per year) 💰 The tender documents show the actual spend on private medical insurance in 2022-23 was £642k for 1066 staff This is equivalent to 3690 x FY1 fees or 2006 x PA fees

This is really important. Thank you @philipmurraylaw Labour MPs who voted for assisted suicide are more likely to represent powerful middle class voters. Please analyse the data for visible minorities. Assisted suicide is a white middle class obsession & a first world issue.
I've asked a colleague who teaches stats in the University to run constituency deprivation scores and assisted suicide votes through some independent statistical analysis. The results are quite interesting. Here, for example, are how Labour MPs split on assisted suicide:
