Y'all do know when we talk about justice reimaginement & rebuilding (formerly known as criminal Justice reform in my mind), the reimaginement part means leaning away from fines, fees, shame, and incarceration tactics - right?
That's me! Mauree Turner. Pronouns They & She (not preferred, just pronouns)
I am a born n raised Muslim-Oklahoman. Non-binary femme, & community organizer. The work I've been doing with, in, & for my community goes back years.
After winning the race for Oklahoma state House for District 88, Mauree Turner becomes the first nonbinary state legislator in US history and the first Muslim lawmaker in Oklahoma
I didn't need a legislative seat to care for and work in my community. Community organizers rarely need seats to provide for our neighbors, friends, and family. but the nation is changing and should serve all of our people. You should have to have a degree to have healthcare or
Content Warming: mention of suicide & death.
By now you might have heard the news about the Oklahoma medical examiner determined Nex Benedict's death a suicide. I was made aware this afternoon when I stepped out of the chamber & a reporter told me
..a well paying job. You shouldn't have to work yourself into an early grave just to survive. We know that and we're hear to change that.
We're here to build an American that works for everyone.
Nothing About Us Without Us 💛💪🏿
My colleague referencing "colored babies" is how I know they don't have the ability to make legislation that effects everyday Oklahomans in an unbiased way....
Just a reminder:
•I'm not a woman, I'm nonbinary & gender nonconforming
•I use they~* pronouns
•I do not work in DC.
•I advocate hard for women, & especially WOC, because we all should - but that does not make me a woman.
Happy Pride Month, y'all!
~* = they, them, theirs
☀️🌻Good Morning 🌻☀️
The Hill I'm willing to die on today is the erasure of the phrase "preferred pronouns".
Over the past few weeks I was flung from small town (city) Oklahoma, into a media whirlwind. There were a lot of questions that were asked frequently. 1/10
So, I want to make sure I name:
Whether or not it was a suicide or homicide - The state of Oklahoma absolutely is responsible for the death of Nex Benedict. From Ryan Walters, to school officials, to members of the Oklahoma Legislature.
Words that have been heavy on my heart for the past week:
'you will never be able to legislate trans people away, all you'll do is create an unsafe environment in which they don't feel like living' - My Dentist.
Today is the first day someone sent me an email request and used: "Mx. Turner"
Is it possible for an email greeting to make you feel seen and understood?
Asking for me

We failed Nex and continue to fail students like Nex when these leaders* remain in power. We also know that isolation is a tool of oppression. That is what they are continuously trying to do: isolate us, drive us out of the state, or throw a stone and wait for our deaths.
HISTORIC WIN: Mauree Turner has been elected to Oklahoma's state House, becoming one of the first non-binary state lawmakers in America and the first Muslim to serve in Oklahoma's state legislature.
I’m thankful to be able to fight for community visibility on a greater scale & humbled that
@IlhanMN
sees the importance in this fight & joining us. We can win this, but not without you too! Now let's go win!
#HD88
I think we all knew what happened today was coming, & if you didn't then you haven't been paying attention.
There are a number of things that led to the domestic terrorism that took place in our nation's capital today. 1/6
Women are not the only people who can have babies. Women are not the only people who need access to safe family planning & safe abortions.
The erasure is a lil rampant today💛
Tomorrow at 1:30pm there will be a march at the Oklahoma Capitol. I hope to see you there. Often in deep times of despair like this better understand the need for more community. Especially at this time & this place. For more information reach out to Rural Oklahoma Pride.
And that's just really how I feel on Monday and Everyday.
The Oklahoma Legislature tried to erase trans & gender non-conforming folks last week & they'll try it again & again.
But we are here
Our People & History won't be erased.
Frankly put:
I've been defending my right to show up & just exist as a Black, Queer, Gender-Diverse, Muslim-American for just about my whole life to rooms full of white cis-het men. Today wasn't new, but the hurt is different - 1/
I work in a building that won't enforce wearing mask because it doesn't matter to them, but I don't wear a suit coat & now they're telling me they won't count my vote..
In a place where R's outnumber D's ~5 to 1 - they said they would strip HD88 of 1 of it's voices
1/3
I have a lot of feelings about tonight. But overall, I'm grateful for HD88 granting me this opportunity. I hate SQ805 & so many other things slipped through our fingers... But I'm ready to fight hard as hell so they never do again.
Nothing About Us Without Us
Let's go get 'em 88
Whew....getting my pronouns right in your article where you asked for my nonbinary opinion is an act of harm reduction, folks.😵💫
Also, i don't "identify as" nonbinary.
I am simply nonbinary.
This weekend Anthony, MJ, & loaded up to go to the park.
We found this mural that reads: RlP Nex - it's in district 88 too
We drove around the block, parked, & spent a little time there.
Thankful for this space with you.
When I walk into the chamber and there's a gaggle of troopers talking about me, I think about how Republicans have use every resource in their *power to make this place unsafe to Trans Oklahomans.
To Us. To Me.
Honestly, the amount of messages that share this same sentiment I've received over the past week are heartbreaking & empowering at the same time.
The hope is people across the nation, & possibly the world, take what they need from this campaign. Take hope.

I'm from Oklahoma and had to grow up and flee to New England to be safe to be my queer self, so this announcement on Tuesday was the one that made me break down crying 😭 I never thought that I'd see something like this.
The death penalty has no place in this world. To think people get justice by watching someone die lacks the sight of community care while highlighting 1 of the worst truths about our prison industrial complex - it's fueled by revenge & has nothing to do w/ rehabilitation.
Well, we have made it through another election together.
It has been the honor of a lifetime to work for House District 88 alongside you all. I have learned so much about community care, being a leader vs. a manager, and YOU throughout this experience. (Cont.)
WATCH: Oklahoma
@GovStitt
asked why he wasn't wearing a mask at today's presser.
Stitt: "Well, I've already had
#COVID19
"
CDC says people infected and recovered should still wear masks:
@OKCFOX
Did we get any photos of him trying to make free & reduced lunch the standard, meetings to make sure every school has a guidance counselor for every grade, how about equitable pay???
We should all be disturbed at the direction our state is headed under this leadership.
I hate social media & here I am.
Anybody who tells you to cling to Faith & yet doesn't jump to action when they have the power to, is absolutely dangerous.
Instead of using CARES funds to help Oklahoman's we are giving Oklahoma travel stops a makeover. 1/4
*kind note: this is not just a sad day for women*
1: everyone should be outraged by this decision
2: women are not the only people who need access to abortion
3: your friends who 'get it' & are 'working on it', that are only talking about women right now - call them in.
The amount of compounding bigotry you face when you are Black, Muslim - when you're a part of any other marginalized community & an elected official - it's a lot. This has a ripple effect on our entire communities. I stand with you
@IlhanMN
💛
Saying I am a suicide bomber is no laughing matter.
@GOPLeader
and
@SpeakerPelosi
need to take appropriate action, normalizing this bigotry not only endangers my life but the lives of all Muslims. Anti-Muslim bigotry has no place in Congress.
Whew chillay.....
I really don't know what to say about this. I'm highly appalled and feel deeply disrespected. On behalf of my district, my family, and myself..
Y'all....we really found out about about this via a BIRD APP. No Email.
As a non-binary Oklahoma who has to sit in rooms with these folks who quite literally pretend that I don't exist - I don't expect anything less from them.
1 question that continues to stick out is 'what are my "preferred pronouns"' - whether they mean do I prefer 'they' over 'she', or if they haven't researched & don't know what my pronouns are.
They are just pronouns, Not preferred 2/10
You put me here for a reason. The work we are embarking on is slow, steady, work. And I'm so glad to be able to do it with the most important people, you.
Nothing About Us Without Us 💛💪🏿
They. Them. Their's. Representative.
The Dolls are out here getting real bold & disrespectful with the misgendering - Allies and Otherwise.
Don't center yourself in your apology, or offense, when folks (I) correct you for misgendering them (me).
Here we go y'all.
Like I said before - folks that fight hard to keep government out of their personal lives love to legislate over the bodily autonomy of others, love to legislate away safe and healthy access to needed healthcare. Grateful to HD 88 for my armor today.
Hey there, I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about today that I am still processing.
This is a bill that the author said would have people detransition - I am right here in this fight with you more than you know and feeling a lot of the same feelings you are.
This is one of the vile things I have seen.
Trans Girls are Girls.
Trans Women are Women.
This message is part of the discrimination that folks will feel as a result of the legislation that Toni Hasenbeck passed.
All House Dems just voted against Oklahoma girls being able to realize their athletic dreams. Why do Democrats want women's sports dominated by biological men?
#OkLeg
#SaveWomensSports
I think there's something to be said for the coward that lives in the soul of a man who waits while the nation is watching & grieving the loss of children and adults in a school shoot - as he signs in the most restrictive abortion ban in the nation.
1/
Love you all dearly,
But unless you're making a point to educate people on Femmes within International Women's Day - you all continuously tagging me is just misgendering me. It also leads us to see how 'White Feminism' is selective in nature & not True Feminism. 1/
When I think about what this means words like relief, grateful, ready fill my heart and mind.
The Relief of being able to breathe a bit.
Grateful for what People Power delivered.
Ready to Build Back Better.
Congratulations

If someone has to convince you their bill is not transphobic while folks that live beyond the gender binary say it's going to aid in direct & increased harm...
The bill is in fact transphobic.
Today I published a piece of legislation that creates a state question & asks every Oklahoma voter what they think about the Death Penalty.
We've seen a very large groundswell to not only put an end to mass incarceration but also to abolish the death penalty in Oklahoma.
I sit in this building everyday & listen to people literally preach, strip away body autonomy..I've had conversations where colleagues ask me how to check the genitalia of Non-binary people. Colleagues have literally put me & my family in danger bc they 'didn't understand'

🌾💛Hey There 💛🌾
I know it's been awhile, but I've had a few conversations this week and I want to remind y'all:
I actually am not a congress person, I don't work for the federal government, I don't live in DC
... But, I do have a surprise for you in December 🌾 👀🌾
Lotta weight with this verdict.
Take care of yourself.
And if no one has ever told you:
Your self-care is also how you allow others to show up for you.
A writing example:
'Mauree Turner is the first non-binary person to be elected to a state level position. They have spent their life fighting for equitable access to civil rights and liberties. Lately she's been kicking it with the TikTok kids.' 5/10
*Still really cool!?*
We are on Stolen Land.
The map below highlights some of the indigenous people we can trace back to the boundaries that are House District 88.
However, please remember, there is a lot more indigenous history and tribal land here.

🌻☀️Hey there☀️🌻
I'm starting to cut back on the types of interviews I do & cut back on doing interviews in general for a few reasons. Check out this *thread* if you want to know more.
(This is for freelance journalist, college students, professors etc.) 1/8
I've seen so many ugly things in my short lived life, so it won't take the cake - but a man pretending he can't hear me through my mask to avoid a question ... While stumbling through answering other masked questions....is up there.
💛Good Morning - Just A Reminder 💛:
What's happening in Texas is mostly likely going to trigger some, double-down, bad policy in legislatures across America. Remember, this is an attack on anybody with a uterus that needs access to an abortion - not only women.
All in all: it's okay to use They & She & Xe & so forth in the same article.
I heavily encourage journalists to also care about the folks they are interviewing, not just the article they need to write. It's okay to continue your education outside of the classroom, loves💛
10/10
Respectfully - my pronouns are: They / Them / Their's.
My pronouns are not: She / Her(s)
I think it's important to name this because this press conference was specifically about bills that try to erase our varying gender diverse populations.
@MaureeTurnerOK
becoming emotional sharing her struggles identifying as 2S+LGBTQ while growing up in Oklahoma…
“I hear from students in the district and their families about what legislation like this does.”
Says she can’t imagine growing up with this rhetoric.
Sitting in my apartment staring at a 3yr-old, crying, bc sometimes the realization we're are alive is deeply moving.
Growing up as a Black, Trans, Queer, Muslim from OKLAHOMA made K-12 (+ the 7yrs of undergrad - sry mom & OSU) rough.
But today we're alive & that's enough.
OKC & Tulsa have some of the highest rates for police murders (I'm talking about police killing people) I'm sad, angry, & disgusted.
Imagine killing somebody because they protested for sanitary living conditions. Imagine pointing guns at civilians bc...1
🌻💛Happy Juneteenth Y'all💛🌻
Reminder:
People-centered language tells us we talk about 'people who were enslaved' or 'enslaved people', we do not talk about slaves. Just like we talk about people who are incarcerated or justice involved, not prisoners or felons.
I will forever be excited to stand shoulder to shoulder with
@ewarren
in this fight. A Hero of mine.
I'd love it if you join us in this fight today. Sign up for a shift here!
Nothing About Us Without Us 💛💪🏿
I'm excited to endorse
@MaureeTurnerOK
for the Oklahoma House of Representatives. Mauree has dedicated their career to reimagining a justice system that has community care at its core. Now more than ever, we need leaders like Mauree with the courage to fight for bold solutions.
My gawd, GOP'S across the nation are singing a tune of:
"I don't know how to do my job, but I'm going to try my best to shut you up because you know how to do yours."
This is repulsive.
In response to the MT Freedom Caucus' call for my censure, I stand by my description of the devastating consequences of banning essential medical care for trans youth.
As long as I am a member of the Montana Legislature, I will never stop fighting for trans people in our state.
Y'all I'm gonna tell you now - no "new jail" will ever help the people.
I'm saying this as your current representative, and a common sense community member.
There are some cis-het folks that will never know the toll it takes on trans & GNC folks to see these harmful bills that attack our everyday lives.
For some allyship stops at donations, voting, their front door etc
Our lives exist beyond these points.
We are meant to exist.
There are a lot of things here that don't sit right with me, on top of a really draining past 28 years.
"I made..racist comments believing the mic was off.."
anything that comes after this statement is a smoke screen, but we can go a little further..
I truly do hope all of the men in these photos get the help they are ready and willing to accept.
I know folks are calling for him to be censured as well, but there is a stark difference between me and all of the men in these photos. I did not commit a crime.

Three House Republicans in Oklahoma are in trouble with the law:

Terry O’Donnell (bottom left): 2021

@WayneStaffordTV
I also want to remind you, I created a rule that would address all of this and they refused to pass that. I have stayed within the dress code as it applies to me.
This is a really good example of how checks & balances here only work for some. 3/3
Facebook reminded me that 3 years ago today made a status that said my outfit was 🔥 fire, and that people should see it.
Well, I got my wish just 3 years later, thanks to a fellow representative.

Folks that behind closed doors wanted to show up & learn from me voted against our existence when it came time to do the same thing in public - and that is dangerous, but we new that. I knew that. 3/
To the bbz watching HB1888, my heart breaks. Know I'm hear bc of you. I go into battle everyday for you. We're going into battle w/ this bill, but remember, the movement we built together isn't complete if you dont make it to the other side with me.
Nothing About Us Without Us💛
Late post.
Yesterday was veterans day & also the day I got sworn into office officially. I'm thankful for those who laid their life on the line so that I could be here today - able to stand tall & fight, including my ancestors from all my intersections.

TW: Mention of Su*icide
If students don't come from affirming homes this could lead to conversion therapy, that seriously messes kids up. Subjects kids to public ridicule by peers and facility/staff. Or worse leads to su*cide attempts or su*cide as a whole.
HB 1888, which bans the teaching of sexual or gender diversity in schools, now has an amendment that would require teachers and school staff to out students
#oklaed
LEO's aren't equipped to handle connecting folks to resources needed or deescalating situations. Basic essentials needed when caring for communities. We must end qualified immunity & start pumpin funds into mental health 1st responders
Bennie Edwards should still be alive today
I do wonder if Kevin Stitt ever gets tired of making a mockery, not only of the state, but also himself.
This separate, and unequal executive order signed here in Oklahoma couldn't be further disconnected with what Oklahoma's need.

When asking for 'preferred pronouns' a couple of things are happening:
1: Saying it's okay to erase part of someone's identity to get a story to air
As writers, folks lending their platform, this should never be the case. It's your job to educate yourself to be better. 6/10
I can't stress enough: abortion care, & access, is for everyone, not just women.
If you have attended a rally & there wasn't a call to action, or you weren't moved to research thoroughly & act on what's next... That is in fact a performance, not allyship, my love.
It's important to note:
When someone says their pronouns are "they / them", that means you use they / them / their pronouns for them.
When someone tells you what their pronouns are you utilize them.
it's always different when there is so much more than just you on the line.
Colleagues I've sat in rooms with since November 2020 that told me they would be committed to the use of proper pronouns, learning, & growing together, voted against our existence. 2/
It was literally
@MerriamWebster
's word of the year in 2019 (which I know feels like centuries ago, itself, but in actuality it was just last year😳). 9/10
Merriam-Webster announced "they" is its 2019 Word of the Year.
It notes that "they" been used as a singular pronoun in English for more than 600 years — and has spiked in popular use in recent years to refer to people who are nonbinary.
There's a lot I don't understand about how people abuse the power of their institutions and weaponize it against people of color..... But, when was the last time weed made somebody run impressively fast????? Come on now.
Our election is over, but we're still awaiting the fate of the nation. So I'm doing a quick 30-minute live to see how folks are holding up, let you know what's happening on our end, & give a mini Friday 5!
Join us on Instagram!
Going to try to stick to 30mins! Haha

I've spent the morning thinking about the Rodriguez family. I'm sick to my stomach and my heart is really more heavy than I thought it could be.
I'm at a loss for words, but also realize this is not a time to be silent for so many reasons 1/10
HB1888 Has already done so much long-term damage. To my colleagues reading this, & I know you do, your votes will tell a larger story than you think.
Those of you who have come across the aisle to tell me you are sorry this bill even exists - I'm asking you to stand with us.
They said your voice isn't something we need, but we'll take it just bc we can..for a suit coat.
In a place where there are other people not following the dress code. They pick & choose which rules they enforce & who they enforce them for...2/3
Yesterday was an odd day at work.
I find the stance of people who take up this fight odd because, more often than not, they want 'big government' to stay out of their business, but they love to be in very personal parts of people's lives...like this.
Maskless, loud & wrong - IMO
The variation of pronouns (i.e. She/her(s)) happens because in different areas of writing you will need to refer to someone in different forms (Sub., Pos., & Obj.)*. When we find out what pronouns someone used we switch through the forms accordingly. 3/10
Quick question:
When you misgender someone, they correct you, and then you follow it with: 'I'm sorry, I'm working on it..'
What does: 'I'm working on it..,' mean??
