Growing up as a kid my favorite 2 movies were Ghostbusters and Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Today it hit me that both films are about struggling academics that can’t obtain funding to carry out their research. #phdlife #AcademicTwitter @AcademicChatter.

It’s job season for many. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but. When a student gets a job there needs to be a huge celebration. An “Awesome, congrats” is not good enough. 👎🏼 Friends, food, drinks, music, and bad dancing must be involved. 🕺🏼💃🏽👏🏼🍾🎤 🎈@AcademicChatter.

Coming from someone involved in interviewing >100 grad school applicants every year, undergrads that participate in research as subjects should absolutely list it on their resume. PIs, provide study title. HUGE conversation starter! @AcademicChatter.

After 6+ years of service, my time with the @NSCA Foundation is coming to an end. It’s been an honor. I’m proud of what our Board and committees accomplished together. The future of the NSCA depends on the Foundation, and is great hands!

A first in my academic career. The weather has been incredible lately, so I lectured outside! No technology…just paper, pencil, and discussion with great @UCF_DPT students. Teach outside. Really 📝☀️🌳🍃

This summer I sold my soul and had 1st year @UCF_DPT students create memes for physiology lecture. It was a big hit with tons of laughs 🤣🤣🤣. New data in Advances in Physiology Education shows that using memes may enhance student learning.

Things overheard in a @ucfchps older adult 🧓🏽training study:. 87 year old: “There’s no way I can lift that!”. Us: “Well, how about you try? We believe in you.”. 87 yr old: “OK…I guess” Does 5 reps 💪. 87 yr old: “OMG I did it!!! I can’t believe it!! And that was fun!”. Us: 😎.

Mentorship skills should be instructed (as in, formal coursework) to all PhD students and/or 1st year Assistant Professors. Academia can’t continue to just hope that faculty members magically develop the characteristics needed to be a strong mentor/leader.

As an academic at home with 2 young children and a wife on the front lines (hospital RN), I have 2 constant thoughts:. 1. I’m getting zero work done. 2. I’m blessed to get this time with my kids. Let the latter thought prevail.
There are lots of posts about the difficulties of working when your kids are also home (and need help with distance learning). And it IS hard; very hard. However, I just took a 20 min. break from work to play Xbox with my boys during their free time, and I love that.

Today on things older adults in a 6-wk strength training study say:. “I’ve had mild pain forever. I’ve been to lots of doctors and therapists. Nothing helped. Bc of your research study, I feel like a new person. Don’t compensate your participants. They should pay you.” @UCF_IEPRS.

Feedback I’ve recently received from grad students: Teach the use of a reference manager (@zotero) the very 1st day of the program. Don’t wait for a specific class or module. It helps across the entire student experience. @AcademicChatter @UCFGradStudies.

More evidence of age and sex (in older adults) differences in the rate of force development w/ voluntary contractions. Involuntary strength was similar between ages, suggesting reduced neural activation is key mechanism. @EJAP_official
