📈 Key Finding 3: Yet, the childcare expansion increased mothers employment: A 10 percentage point increase in childcare coverage increases maternal employment by 4.5 percentage points. Overall, public childcare mainly substitutes maternal care. #LaborMarket #GenderRoles

👨‍👧‍👦 Key Finding 2: However, fathers’ involvement beyond their parental leave remains limited. Despite more childcare slots and increased paternal leave, moms remain the primary caregivers on weekdays. Fathers' subsequent employment is largely unaffected #CareWork #Parenting

📈 Key Finding 1: With the childcare expansion, more dads started taking paternity leave - anticipating mothers' earlier return-to-work: A 10 percentage point increase in childcare coverage boosted fathers' leave take-up by about 3.5 percentage points. #PaternityLeave

Setting the stage: We use generalised DiD-methods and #KiBS data from @DJI_Redaktion to evaluate effects of the German childcare expansion. We first show that it increased childcare attendance after the first birthday - right after gaining legal entitlement for a slot.
