Most liberal white Americans are sadly detached from their own unique cultures and heritage, so they developed a culture of performative self-loathing and insisting they have no contributions. In reality, European culture is so ubiquitous that they can't identify it.

This is a good example of the "compacted lie" problem. If you build a society based on lie compacted upon lie, then the ground of truth becomes so deeply buried that it is inaccessible & there is only a hyperreality of saying the symbolically "right" thing instead.
