Father, son, husband and Retired Firefighter. Interests-Sports, politics,books,music,films and travel .Proud trade unionist. RT’s are not an endorsement.
To Ireland he was King James, first man to win Player of the year twice, fulcrum of the great Down teams of the early 60’s but to me he was Uncle James, my godfather. I love you,I’ll miss you and always be grateful for everything you did for me. RIP James McCartan.
Last day as a firefighter. 30 years in NIFB and NIFRS. It’s been an absolute privilege to work in such a great institution but it’s been even better to work with such fantastic people. Firefighters are a unique bunch. We run towards things all sensible people run away from. 1/2
Congratulations to
@KilcooGAC
, you were fantastic tonight and are deserving champions. To our
@CarryduffCLG
lads you played your hearts out and that is all we can ask, learn from tonight and make sure we are back, I’m proud of you all. Duff Abu 💜💛
60 years ago today, these men along with their teammates and management lead Down to the pinnacle of Gaelic football for the second year in a row.
Gaels of Down GAA are forever grateful to the men of ‘61.

2/3rds of the full back line from 1968 and 2 men you want on your team. I had the pleasure of playing with my Dad for many years and the privilege of playing against Tom at least once.
@georgeeaton
Absolutely but why did they even think about going and why did they leave. No thoughts for anyone else except themselves. I love to ski but we just said no this year.
The Down 1929 football team with my grandfather Briany McCartan in it. Briany captained Down the first time they wore red and black and also bought TCD their first ever GAA jerseys- red and black off course.
Friends and opposing captains. Isa and Holly. Before and after the game today. Well done to
@BredaghGAC1
on their victory over
@CarryduffCLG
. One is my cousin and the other one of my close friends daughter. 2 fantastic girls.
Immensely proud of these young men, they are a credit to themselves, their families and the club. To win 3 in a row with mostly the same team is a tremendous achievement. Well done lads, enjoy the night and it's back to
@KickhamsCreggan
In the new year. Duff Abu
Down punching so far above their weight in hurling. IMO the best hurling management team in the country. Tremendous work being done as well by all the clubs in producing quality hurlers. Brilliant ❤️🖤
As the proud father of a fantastic young man with autism I find what Julia Hartley-Brewer said as completely hateful, ill informed and just wrong. Using a disability as an insult, my god what is going through this woman's mind.
This is your first tweet, the one you deleted and laughably claimed you used autistic because it was in Greta's bio. It comes in a stream of invective and is plainly an insult. You then tweeted exactly the same without the word autistic, trying to pretend you had not sent the 1st

Never in my career as a firefighter did I or any crew I was on make a decision based on race or religion. It’s not what we do. We help people, all people. All firefighters would say the same. It was a disgraceful thing to say at the enquiry for Grenfell.
Great article in today’s Irish News about the 1968 Down team who meat regularly
@magherainn
I was fortunate to have played against a few of them and remember following them in the red and black through the 70’s. Arkle, and Rooney were my boyhood hero’s.

Sean Og is an absolute gentleman and has done more work for Down than possibly anyone else ever. This attack is from someone who won’t even say who he is. Crawl back under your rock whoever you are.
@MayobridgeGAC
legend Tom O’Hare watching tonight’s match with our own legend Dan McCartan. Two of the best and toughest ever to wear the red and black

We couldn't see the games at all in the north as TV3 doesn't broadcast up here, at least with sky it's shown all over Ireland
Only a few weeks until we are back. We have new members coming to learn to ski so if you or someone you know wants to learn. Just DM us. Here is Cyril, Sean & Caolan our Olympic medal winners at the last Special Olympic Games.
Today we look back at Páirc Mhic Asmaint in the 1960s!
Casement Park hosted the Ulster Final when 1960 All Ireland Champions An Dún played Ard Mhacha in front of crowd of over 40,000 in 1961
Down (pictured at Croke Park) would lift the Anglo-Celt and Sam Maguire that year.
But we pull together and get it done. We help everyone no matter who they are. We worked through the worst days of NI but always stood together. I’ve also been proud to be a member of the best trade union on the planet. Thanks guys.

What a day for our 2 members Ben McCarroll and Sean McCartan who won 2 Gold and 2 Silver medals, respectively, in the Ulster Special Olympics winter games in Slalom and giant slalom Alpine Skiing. Remarkable achievement guys.
Brendan Mason ⚡️ Down
A lethal finisher for Loughinisland and Down, Brendan won a National League in 1983 and an Ulster U21 in 1984.
In 1985 he scored 23 goals and 85 points for

The latest GAA social with Dion Dublin was probably the best individual pod I’ve ever listened to. Pure class. What a football brain he has, picked up on so much in a few days. Any coach would love to have him for a few days just to pick his mind
Don’t normally do personal stuff here but these are my oldest friends. Everyone meets the Saturday before Christmas for a pint or two. Great tradition, great friends. Happy Christmas everyone
Congratulations to
@CarryduffCLG
on their IHC win today. What a game.
@liatroimfGAA
are a fantastic side and I have so much respect for them, lets hope both teams are playing SHC this year. Fantastic club with fantastic members.

Today is the second anniversary of the Grenfell fire, still 221 buildings with the same cladding in the UK. I walked last year with
@officialJ4G
and I still stand with them. Keep fighting the good fight.
This is us on All Ireland football final day. Unfortunately we won’t be there this year but at least it is getting played. It’s the first year since 1972 I haven’t attended a final.

RIP Ireland’s greatest John Hume. He changed Ireland for the better,he took the gun out of Irish politics and saved many lives.He did so knowing that it would be at the detriment to his political party but he did it anyway.Completely against violence from all sides. A true hero.
Time for 3 championships. Senior, intermediate and Junior. 12,12.10 teams in each. Every team plays each other then playoffs offs for winners/promotion and relegation. Provincial championships played as pre season. 16 weeks of games with a few rest weeks.
Looking forward to seeing these guys back on the pitch at Croke Park later today. The best team of the 90's IMO. Good luck lads and enjoy your day. Down Abu.

I have never met a firefighter who has not put their own life on the line for someone else. We don't ask what colour, race, religion or any other questions about them. If they need help we give it, full stop. Scandalous accusations.

@CarryduffCLG
It was a game that proved why we love championship. Hard, fast, skilful and in the balance until the end. Both teams emptied the tanks and it was literally a toss of a coin between the teams. Hard luck but I’m sure you’ll be back with that team.
It is with the upmost sadness that we learn of the passing of our friend, former player, coach, mentor & ambassador Anto Finnegan. This world has lost a fine man.
Our deepest sympathies to Alison, Conall, Ava & the Finnegan & Dowdall families

I had the pleasure of playing with Brian and he was a wonderful player, undoubtedly he would have played for Down in the 90’s only for his injury. RIP Brian.
Last day for my old recruits 1/92 mate Gavin Morrow so a photo 3 of us from the course , best of luck in your retirement. Randy McComb, Gavin and myself
