To Ireland he was King James, first man to win Player of the year twice, fulcrum of the great Down teams of the early 60’s but to me he was Uncle James, my godfather. I love you,I’ll miss you and always be grateful for everything you did for me. RIP James McCartan.

Last day as a firefighter. 30 years in NIFB and NIFRS. It’s been an absolute privilege to work in such a great institution but it’s been even better to work with such fantastic people. Firefighters are a unique bunch. We run towards things all sensible people run away from. 1/2

My Dad, my uncle and 2 cousins were in that team.
60 years ago today, these men along with their teammates and management lead Down to the pinnacle of Gaelic football for the second year in a row.
Gaels of Down GAA are forever grateful to the men of ‘61.

The Down 1929 football team with my grandfather Briany McCartan in it. Briany captained Down the first time they wore red and black and also bought TCD their first ever GAA jerseys- red and black off course.

Never in my career as a firefighter did I or any crew I was on make a decision based on race or religion. It’s not what we do. We help people, all people. All firefighters would say the same. It was a disgraceful thing to say at the enquiry for Grenfell.

Casement Park hosted the Ulster Final when 1960 All Ireland Champions An Dún played Ard Mhacha in front of crowd of over 40,000 in 1961

A lethal finisher for Loughinisland and Down, Brendan won a National League in 1983 and an Ulster U21 in 1984.

Time for 3 championships. Senior, intermediate and Junior. 12,12.10 teams in each. Every team plays each other then playoffs offs for winners/promotion and relegation. Provincial championships played as pre season. 16 weeks of games with a few rest weeks.

On this day we never forget
A statue of
#FDNY
firefighters Thomas & Daniel Foley was unveiled in W. Nyack. Thomas of Rescue 3 died on 9/11. His brother Daniel, L-49 searched for and found his body 10 days later. Daniel joined R3 in the years following. He died of 9/11 related illnesses in 2020.
